Ladies and gents, As a fairly new runner (9 months or so) it is a real downer that I appear to have developed a significant sharp pain in my left knee that has made it very difficult to run. In fact I had to ditch out of last weeks Sunday run less than a mile in due to the pain.
Using the power of the internet I have decided in my non scientific that the symptoms most relate to Iliotibial Band Syndrome.
To that end I have started the following:
Complete rest (1 week now) Icing daily Ibuprofen regularly (within dosage guidance) Strengthening excercises for Bum, Quads and Hamstrings Foam Rolling ITB Daily stretches
I have also got an appointment through work next week with a physio from DTR Clinic in Cathays Terrace
Is there anything else I can do to assist in recovery other than the above or should I immediately ditch some of it?
It feels somewhat better today compared to last Sunday and as I have a 10k scheduled this Sunday I was tempted to give it a go. The Physio I consulted with on the phone to get the referral to DTR seemed to agree that it was likely to be associated with the ITB and said attempting to do the 10k on Sunday won't make the injury any worse but to be prepared that I may not finish it.
Thanks Marcus.

Hi Marcus, Sounds like you are already doing the right things. I would advise against the 10k until it has had a chance to heal. Don't mix ibuprofen with training/racing it will be counter productive & disguise the damage. Hope this helps... Edited by user 28 February 2014 17:30:38(UTC)

Cheers Howard, I will see how it feels Sunday morning but at the moment I am definitely erring toward leaving it for a while before running again.
Marcus.
