Hey all!
Joint social with SWOC - Whitchurch “MapRun”.
⏰ 7pm
It’s £5 to enter bus essentially it’s 60mins of running and finding checkpoints to score! I’ve done it before and it’s super fun - and maybe one to help build up the mileage in the week!!
Hopefully see you there,
Pete x
From SWOC:
“- Book in advance through website via link to the 'Fabian4' entry system- A few personal details are required, but once entered once, these are saved for any future events- Cost is £5
- Before the event, install the, 'MapRun6' app- It's totally free. (For those with Garmin watches, your mobile will communicate with your watch so you then wouldn't need to run with your mobile). Our website as a link to explain the tech stuff but it's really simple
- Arrive at 6:30pm ish ahead of quick briefing & mass start at 7pm
- There will always a number of SWOC members who can help further explain the format, deal with any tech queries etc
- Before the start, you'll be given a map of the locality showing streets and paths (nothing too complex at all) along with around 30 'checkpoints'
- The aim of the event is to visit as many checkpoints as you can in 60 minutes- penalties apply if late arriving back at the finish (next to the start)
- To make things interesting, the checkpoints are valued between 10 & 30 points & each competitor chooses their own route- so a bit of strategy creeps in
- What newcomers to this format also really like is that everything is electronic through the MapRun6 app- Before you start, you link the event to your watch or mobile (really simple- 2 clicks!) and when you cross the start, your watch/mobile 'bleeps' and starts your 60 minute 'stopwatch'. When you reach a checkpoint marked on your map (like a road junction), your watch/mobile will 'bleep' again to tell you and record your visit (as there's nothing physical on the ground to mark the checkpoint). When you reach the finish, your watch/mobile will again 'bleep' and stop your stopwatch for the event. You then save your race and it automatically uploads onto the leaderboard including a full list of the checkpoints you've visited plus a strava-style map showing you where you've been
I hope this helps give a good flavour and I'd really stress that although the tech side of things might sound complicated, it really isn't at all- especially if I can easily use it!
We're finding that this format is starting to attract a much wider audience, especially runners who can still have a great 60 minute blast but with a bit of a twist and gentle competition.”
