Dear fellow Croups,

I'm looking for advice/recommendations for a Marathon training plan.
Having only recently joined the running community, I've registered for Newport 2020 (19th April) which will be for my 1st marathon
I'd really prefer hearing some sensible training advice from club members rather than risk internet searches for generic plans. I couldn't see anything recent on the forum for this.

I want to start a training plan in mid-December which should equate to 16 weeks of training and am looking to train safely and complete 'respectably' as well as continuing to participate in club events/races. I'm sure I'm not the only one in this boat so any advice would be greatly appreciated regardless of level/speeds/fitness!

Feel free to either email directly (martinmcclatchey@gmail.com), PM me, post on the forum or catch me at club sessions (I'm away next week: 1st-7th Dec) if you've got some wisdom to share!

Many thanks in advance y buena suerte a todos para Valencia!

Martin

Great post, Martin.
You've already said that you want a personal plan rather than go to the internet - that tells me you're already ahead of the game.
Come and chat on a Thursday night - tomorrow if you want.
As a general post to all would be marathoners for next year, I would advise:
Plan well ahead (as you already have).
Consistency is the key - any increases in workload/mileage should be gradual - allowing your body to adapt.
At all costs you want to avoid illness and/or injury.
Run with others on key sessions (long run or quality).
Choose your running partners carefully - ideally someone slightly better than yourself to drag you along. Sharing and negotiating with others can be highly mutually beneficial - particularly if there are shared goals.
If you like playing on this website you can
Refer to similar threads from the past (on this or the old Forum)
Read back copies of our newsletter, ACE. It's been going since 1982 and is a wonderful natural resource which I'm convinced is rarely utilised.
Play on our TV/video channel for some wonderful nostalgia as well as invaluable graphic detail of events we do.
Congratulations on reading this far and already being a member of the greatest club on the planet. Anything you do now will be a bonus.

Mick will offer sound advise..he has ran more sub 230s than ive done marathons ..

You will get a variety of advise here. What works for some doesn't work for others.. a lot depends on your goals

Some thinga work for me

1. Enjoy the training ..Try and do long runs in a group makes it easier...

2. Long runs . I usually go to 24 miles - im usually trying for sub 3.. with varied success.

3. Work how you can get electrolytes on your run.. they prevent cramp in the marathon.. you need more than in training.. same for.fluid and gels or sugar..

4. Try a tester half.. so you can work out what is a realistic marathon goal..

5. pace.judgement is key on race day..

6. Enjoy it.. above all..

7. I do speed work but its not essential.. long runs are.. ive done a 3hrs 30 sec ish on no speed at all due to injury management..

Thanks to both of you for your advice and encouragement. It's much appreciated!
I know I'm probably closer to James' general pace rather than Mick's top 10 PB average, so am very grateful for the varied perspectives!
It's certainly given me some extra things to consider too
Thanks again, Martin
