No easy way to say this. I have today decided to cancel the Barry 40, which was scheduled for 5th March 2017. I have received offers of help, and even Phil said he would organise it for me.
I can offer no legitimate excuse, except to say that lots of runners were awaiting a reply, and so I recommended other events which were already being organised.
At the very least, I want to go on record to thank everyone for your support. Les Croupiers truly is the greatest club on the planet, and I know my decision will both mystify and anger members.

Sorry to hear that Mick but I fully understand why you took the decision you did.

That must have been one of the hardest decisions you've ever made Mick. You LOVE that race, and it's been a long standing high quality endurance event that's well respected the world over. You've dedicated so many hours of your life to this - as have others, the officials and volunteers. You can be very proud of your achievement.

I dont know whats behind this but im sure someone like yourself would have very good reason. I have been on the sidelines of this event and it is a real inspiration!

You have acheived more in this sport than many will ever dream of! You are someone that has inspired me and many others.

I have lost count of how many times the thought "what would Mick do" has come into my head (not that I have always done it!)

You should keep your head held high Mick! Smile

Just to say thanks Mick. In 15 years of distance running this was my only DNF. It was just too hard. Harder than UTMB. Hard.

I found my mental and physical limit.

For that reason it will live on always as one of my most memorable races.

I think Tracey and Amanda posts says it all, knowing all the hard work you've put in on the Barry 40 for the last 30/31 years, this couldn't have been a very easy decision to make. But fully understandable.

"toucheth his running vest and all thy injuries will be cureth"

..so I was once assured by a fellow disciple

No apologies, excuses, ever needed - just thanks (and the hope you'll be running again soon)

Just to update on this, the Barry 40 will be going ahead in 2017 - it has been pencilled in for Saturday 18th March 2017 - I hope to be able to confirm this early next week.

Mick has put a lot of work into establishing and maintaining this event, so we will be helping maintain the sequence of successful events. Further details will be posted as soon as they have been confirmed.

The history and reputation of this event is, as said already, testament to Mick's tireless efforts at establishing it as a UK ultra classic. Selfishly, I'd be gutted (but not angry, my fault not getting there yet) if it disappeared before getting a chance to experience it first-hand. Brilliant that it's continuing, putting the date in the calendar.

It's been something I would like to aspire to do but I'm not in that place yet. I would not like to think of it as gone.

Goals are a journey that we set ourselves. Our ambition sets the goals which is driven by our passion. We often bite off more than we can chew. I know I have many times! The greater the challenge the bigger the risks and the richer the rewards.

I think the track below quite eliquently describes the bittersweet relationship that many of us have with running. (see link)

Its all about the journey but it is our passion that drives us. Life is nothing without disapointment because disapointment is the precursor to our destination which is our goal.

Success is the affirmation of our passion and ambition. If we dont feel we have got that affirmation we sometimes need to reflect on what we have achieved and what we had to do to get there. We can even change our goals to achieve great things.

We might even realise one day that our journey was a great one and we achieved much along the way.
