Also the Welsh Masters wants to bring in standards for next years Welsh Masters champs which has cause quite a discussions and could put people off, like me and maybe lose a few members. Please let Welsh Masters know you views. I argee with standards for big competitons but not at this level when you are trying to encourage people.

I would be in the same boat as you Tracey so yes, we would be disadvantaged by that change. However I can understand why Welsh Masters would want to bring in a level of standard. You're right though, their membership and numbers of people taking part would fall. The meeting I went along to at Jenner Park recently seemed to be kept alive by the number of young 'guests' there on the night, not the masters. Young athletes should always be encouraged and welcomed, but it wasn't really the point of the Welsh Masters event.

In reply to Tracy's comments, we have always had standards at the Masters T&F Champs. We haven't used them for a year or two, as we are currently reviewing them to make them even easier to obtain. The previous standards were already much easier than the current BMAF standards, (10 to 12% easier than BMAF). It is a complex exercise to set standards, especially in the field events where implements have different weights for different ages etc. When finalised though they will be "softer" than the previous set. The correct way to protest to WMAA is to put a proposal forward and turn up in force at the AGM and vote against standards being set at our Championships. There are also 2 other ways to obtain medals, enter and train harder to make sure you reach the standards or enter and hope that nobody else enters within your age group, as all winners receive Gold irrespective of numbers competing. Replying to Amanda's comment, we allow "young guests" to run in a two fold capacity, one, to help recover the hire costs of the stadiums and two, to encourage youngsters into the sport, competing in a relaxed situation. The more events that we can balance the books or make a small profit helps to filter into our general Masters finance. This then is used for other disciplines within the sport. (Examples) Old Father Time race medals and the financing of hosting the British and Irish Cross Country International every 5 years.

Mike the Welsh Masters are completely innocent in this. Clashes are non productive for all of us. We avoided the Merthyr Mawr 5k last event. If you look on the Welsh Athletics website and click on Competitions. The original "Pamphlet" on there is still downloadable, it reads as us at Swansea on the 8th and the Cosmeston relays on the 15th July. This is now different on the "Calendar" fixtures with no mention of us and the Relays now on the 8th.

Thanks Mel and others who have already contributed to this discussion.
It is rare that a fixture will not conflict with another activity and it's good to have such a range of options and interests from within the club. Yes, it would be nice to have the opportunity to compete in all events but .. sometimes you can't.
The intention of the initial post was to advertise the event but also to draw attention to the choices that members can make.
The issue of standards within meetings is clearly a sensitive one.

Good news Claire. We may even get enough for a relay team.
Undecided whether to challenge Mel in the short stuff and Mal Farnham in the shot.
Saw some track experts at the Monday training session this week but they may not be old enough to gain points. Hope that they can make it.

Working near Swansea today and I have my spikes with me so aim to have a go tonight. May have to enter as a guest unless Mel can take my subs on the day. Have we got a relay team Mike?

Good to see you on the track again last night, Al. The 'old magic' in the last 50m was prominent again - just like Mel.
Well done to Claire (1500m and 800m), Eirian (who seemed to be competing in every event as well as helping with the organisation)) and Clive Osmond (800m).
Sadly, we were unable to field a relay team but neither could Port Talbot. Perhaps we can regain Norman at the Coytrahen Canter ... in the tug o' war.
Next Welsh Masters T&F Meeting will be held on Wed., 19th August at Brecon.
Hope to see all in Brecon.

Claire and I competed in 10 events between us and I believe accumulated 232 points between us. Claren Ania and Julie from Brecon competed in 11 events and accumulated as individuals something over 240 points by my guess. However since they are all in the same age group and the three took part in the hammer, I believe that their team total is around 228. If so we scraped a win and lead 60 to 54. Otherwise we go to Penlan with ahead only 58 to 56. We still need a reasonable turn out at Penlan next month to be sure of retaining the womens cup.

You are flattering me Eirian as the 10 between us is divided 8:2 so you did the lions share of the work. I am not available for the last fixture in Brecon in August so if there are any masters athletes out there that are available it would be great. No doubt as it is their home fixture Brecon AC will be out in numbers so we need all the points we can.

I have been able to check the women's results and allocate points. In the end it was Les Croupiers 228 and Brecon 224. We outscored Brecon because Claire ran the 800m as well as the 1500m and Clare Davies missed it as she was at the Triple jump. That second event you ran Claire, turned defeat into victory. Without it we were 208 to 224. It is a team event and every point garnered by any player counts the same. I expect Brecon to have representatives in every age group and in most events for their home fixture. With Scholey, Sarah-Lynn and Claire unavailable, we again rely on the contributions made by any member that turns up and chips in. Michelle Rivett in previous years, Tracey Newman, and Jo Tucker have all been regular contributors, but we need around half a dozen participants to have a chance at Penlan.
The clubs go to Penlan: Les Croupiers 60 and 890 Brecon 54 and 512 Rhondda 48 and 228 Pembrokeshire 39 and 144 Worcester 24 and 96
Brecon can only win the cup by finishing 3and a half places ahead of us.
