Somebody gave me this advice on running a Marathon today. Never heard it before but its quite interesting. Good advice? In the actual race you could do worse than follow the great Arthur Newton's advice - 'Run the first sixteen miles at a speed that if you were asked to turn round and run back to the start you would be able to do it'

I don't agree with that myself. I personally think you need to run at the fastest possible pace you know you can hold for 26.2 miles. You will then get the best possible time for your current fitness (Sorry, didn't see the 1st marathon bit. It still applies though) Edited by user 25 January 2015 16:33:33(UTC)

I suppose it implies that you then speed up for the last 10 miles.

Listening to advice is a good idea. Following it may not be. We are all very different and have our own ideas of what works for us. The problem with listening to too many people is some of that advice may be contradictory, which could leave us confused as to what to do for the best. Having said that, it is good to keep an open mind. Things which used to work for me don't any more, because I'm now taking almost an hour longer to run the event than I used to 30 years ago. And the person you should always listen to is yourself. No one else knows how you're feeling.

Advice is all well and good. Remember, the marathon is a long way and what might be the advice or indeed experience of an individual does not necessarily mean it will work for someone else. Happy running!!

Or run the first 26.1 at a pace that if you were asked to run to old shades (as last one to the pub buys the drinks) you could!
