Well done to everyone who was there yesterday whether running or helping out, they were tough conditions.

I hope everyone who suffered and needed help has now recovered and have warmed up and feel back to normal.

As far as the event being cancelled, then sorry I don't agree, it was Cross Country in British winter, yes conditions were tough, but nobody forced you to run you could have taken that decision for yourself. I did have some input into the course length being shortened, the course was cut up after last weekends Welsh Schools champs and the organisers had decided that the younger age groups would be reduced but wasn't sure about the Seniors. I was asked for my opinion on it and gave the advice that the Women should be reduced to around 5k and the Men 8k, in my opinion anything shorter wouldn't have been worth running.

These are only my thoughts, and perhaps it is because I've been running Cross Country now for 33 years. I wore a long sleeve, t-shirt and vest, I wasn't warm but had enough layers, having said that my feet were frozen before we had finished the short loop from the start to finish.

Yeah, I've been debating in my head whether I think that the event should have been cancelled. With the benefit of hindsight it is easy to construct compelling arguments each way. On balance, I think that the organisers were correct to run the event in the format that they did (I.e. with shortened routes).

The health and safety notice on the GL website states that:

"Any competitor who has concerns about a safety aspect on the course should bring it to the attention of the organisers and/or the Referee immediately.

If the issue cannot be resolved satisfactorily the competitor will be advised not to participate in the the event."

I read that as applying to weather conditions too.

After seeing the ladies fixture, I made a very deliberate assessment in my mind as to whether I should take part, and seriously considered withdrawing. I knew that I had limited warm clothing to change in to afterwards, and this was a factor in my thinking. I decided that the risk was manageable, and presumably other runners did the same.

Does this mean that I think those who got in to difficulties have only themselves to blame? Absolutely not. I'm an experienced hiker and lead groups of teenagers in the mountains (indeed too far from where we were running!). Hypothermia is a very insidious condition, and you often don't realise you've got it until you're in trouble. I've seen plenty of well-prepared, sensible people being affected.

My point is that everyone should assess their own risk levels and make sure their happy with them. We also need to be aware that even if we deem a risk to be "manageable", we can still come a cropper. If we start cancelling fixtures every time the weather looks a bit hairy we'll rapidly run out of races. If you look at the weather forecast for yesterday, the weather for Cardiff parkrun was forecast to be just as bad as for the GL. Should we have cancelled parkrun "just in case"? Are we just lucky that something similar didn't happen on Saturday morning?

I'm sure that the organisers do not want to see runners in distress any more than the rest of us. They made a decision in good faith to give us an event to run at. I hesitate to criticise them, because I didn't have to make the call.

Agree with Phil, you can't cancel a cross country race because of the weather! The mud and rain make it what it is....athletes have been running in those conditions for years, we've all gone soft! Well done to everyone who turned out for the club xx

This is a compelling thread and no right or wrong answers - even if people have very strong views.
So why not expand and send a few thoughts to ACE - that's what it's there for!
Should we always have the right to determine our own destiny, or do we need telling?
Howard is waiting to hear from you..............................

A big thanks to all who helped us yesterday. It was so reassuring to have such great support. Mike is fine now and back to his cheeky self.
A special thanks to Rod and Sarah , Clare and James. We found that Mike meets all of the criteria for hypothermia ie being old, skinny and daft. Seriously though , it s something that we will bear in mind in the future. Thanks to all officials and staff at Brecon hospital
who even made some special bed socks for Paul. Thanks also to Flash for keeping us smiling and down to earth.
The club yet again proved that it is the best club on the planet and we are glad to be part of it.

See you all on Thursday Gill and Mike

Just to add my praise for all who ran and officiated yesterday.

It is certainly a case of 'I was there and did it'.
As someone posted earlier 'The ever present mug will was well earned'.

It was the toughest GL in my 161 races. It has been cold but the wind chill was the big factor.

I am having some problems with finalising the results - have worked on the Senior Women's all day and nearly have it sorted.

I think what Saturday has proved is you have got to be prepared for any weather which may occur on the day.So preparation is the key to cross country running.Well done to all who took part.

Yes, if anyone would do a write up on this (if they've stopped shivering by now!), I'd be only too grateful to put it in ACE!

I don't think we're soft, I think we just don't like to see fellow runners in trouble / hospital. Anyway, I'm definitely in for the next one, whatever the weather.

IF I've got this right, our SM team currently lies in 2nd place, M40 1st, M50 1st and M60 1st. Senior Women 3rd, F35 3rd, F45 3rd and F55 1st. Very exciting. Hope we get a good turn out for the final race.

Have to say I sure was glad Paul wasn't there, taking photos. To see our grim state, wretched expressions and ungodly swearing captured for eternity would be awful!

James

Two spare base layers and a buff for your mouth if you have toothache. Maybe some waders? Waterproofs for standing around in with the 5000mm rating.
