I have just discovered this. It sstates that it's open to all the youngest competitor being 25 and the oldest 100. It comprises a wide range of sports including Athletics. I think it would be great if could be brought to Britain but there doesn't seem to be much of a following. What do you think? We had the Olypmics so why not this? There is also a European Master Games this October in Nice France this October, again it is open to all.

Sorry to throw a degree of cynicism into your thread, Tracey. One observation:
You get to the Olympics on athletic ability, regardless of background.
In masters championships it may be wonderful that it's open, but it comes down to ability to be able to afford to go, which makes it a less than perfect test of true athletic ability.

While I don't disgree with what you say but I have heard of Olympic athletics selling their Olympic kit to finance their Olympic trip so yes fiances can play a big part in going to any event. Like the Olympic these games also move from country to country so the next one could be somewhere closer. The idea of these games is about encouragement and inclusion, you compete for yourself as suppose for your country or to reach a particular standard. Standards and selection have their place but the can be very discouraging at times and can put people off from ever trying. The Welsh Masters champs are always held Brecon and I have never competed against anyone fron North Wales so it could be arguced that is not a ture test of ablilty. Also I notice that there is two World Masters Champs one in the South and one in North again that could be aguced that is not a ture test of ablility. Since I have started running in 1997 I have seen alot of changes and alot of new races as well alot of new clubs. Encouragement and inclusion is inportant to keep people in clubs and to keep races going, however that does not mean to say that we shoul necessary give medals or places away just for the sake of it but but to encourage every athletic to push themseleves to do their best and to encourage to compete in as many different events as possible as well as trying for selection and doing events such as this one.

Tracy, once again you have raised a thread that is difficult to answer in a couple of lines on a forum.
The World Masters Games is an organised event covering 28 sports as you described. It takes place every 4 years, unlike the WMA Masters Championships, (which is purely athletics) that occurs every 2 years. Without any foresight by either organisation they were both held in the year 2013, obviously this is non productive for all concerned. As they were due to collide again in 2017, the WMA decided to change their pattern and go in between and use the even years, that is why there are 2 following year dates for the WMA Championships. Lyon 2015 and Perth 2016. They will now take place in 2016, 2018, 2020 etc, for the future.
Masters Athletics is a hobby to us and it is all self financed as Mick explained. On the competitive side, though, athletics is one of the only sports that you can line up against World record holders. With regards to hosting World Masters events in Britain, I spent hours of meetings trying to get the WMA Champs in Cardiff, we had the backing of the Welsh Assembly, but once again the current financial situation in Cardiff, let us down. This also happened with our bid for hosting in London.
There are competitive T&F Women Athletes from North Wales, Amanda Wale has won World and European Masters Medals. Amanda is a sprinter and a different age group, hence you have never competed against her, but one of the most significant reasons that you don't see many North Walians competing is that they do not run a track league up there. For us it is a natural progression from our South Wales league and we are fortunate that our WMAA committee members keep it going, one of them is Eirian.
