Nine of the our interested members met and listened to the various options and costs involved in the proposed Lyon trip. Covering all requirements needed for the differing events and involvement was always going to be the major problem in organising a club trip to suit all members and this evolved at the meeting. As we are generally a Road Running Club, the majority were interested in competing within the Half and Full Marathons and the consensus was for staying at Lyon for about 4/5 Days. As myself and a couple of others are hoping to compete at the T&F events, I have suggested that Dave (Coles) looks after that part of the trip (the HM+M) and any other members arrange travel to suit their own requirements. I am always available to give any advice on the research I have gleaned, should any club members need any questions on entries, travel or accommodation though.

I've done some further research in to apartments in Lyon and have found quite a few at what would be around £120 for 4 nights (Thursday to Sunday) based on sharing - I only looked at those with pretty good ratings. Many of the places seem to be filling up so I suggest this is dealt with before next weekend. If those interested in the half/full marathon on 16th August can start firming up definite interest before next Thursday, we can start booking. There is also the option of cancelling for a small extra fee on booking.com if that helps anyone. Regarding Eurostar, the direct train to Lyon from St Panacras seems to leave at only 7.20a.m. from London, which is not much use for travellers from Cardiff (this was the £99 return). The Eurostar trains to other destinations such as Lille or Paris go very frequently, but catching a connection will no doubt add to the cost and time. If anyone has any further knowledge on this, feel free to tell us. Still seems a good option compared with going to Gatwick or Luton to fly.
Hopefully most of us can meet at the club on Thursday night to discuss further. Mel, Jane, Paul, Mike and others who are intending to do track events earlier, this post is mainly for the 13th to 16th August, but the apartments are quite central. As different stadia are used, none of them are that close to the stadia. La Duchere seems to be the main track stadium, but Bron (Men 5000m on 6th August) and Venissieux (Women 5000m on 7th August) are also used for the 1500 and 5000 for example.
Anyone else wanting to enter or come along for the ride, feel free to join in on Thursday or post interest here!

Many thanks dave. I most certainly will be available for the trip, however, I will be looking to stay in Lyon, for at least 10 days primarily to watch the events and indeed make it a holiday. I believe flying would be the more economical approach in terms of logistics and cost. I will gladly look at flight options during the next few days and report back to the group.

Thanks Mel and Dave for all your research. Paul and myself are looking to fly out on 5 August for our events on 6/7 August and probably stay until after the 1500m on 14th. Flybe airlines go from Birmingham to Lyon and are pretty reasonable prices and good flight times. We were looking at the apartments too Dave it would be interesting to compare notes and discuss. They look a good option. Hopefully see you Thursday. Been laid up with chest infection so apologies for not attending previous meetings.

There are flights from Bristol to Lyon by Easyjet. Greyhound bus to Bristol airport from Cardiff, or car of course.

Flights from Bristol with Easyjet are not bookable until April, unless everyone is calm about waiting. I explained this at the get together last Thursday. But what if EasyJet decides to change or cancel flights to Lyon.

Thanks Jane and Graeme for your advice. It looks like Easyjet do not fly frequently from Bristol, currently only once a week, so dodgy to wait for the timetable in April, although obviously it would be more convenient. The Birmingham Flybe option looks good, Jane - £90 return for 13 to 17 August, for example, which sounds more appealing than the Eurostar option, which would require around 7 hours travelling on the train, as opposed to 3.5 hours plus airport time if going from B'ham Airport.

Further to Dave's (Coles) research on apartments, myself and Dave, with Mike Davies, showed a positive commitment last night and have secured a triple room in the Quality Suites Lyon Confluence Apartments. These are in the centre of Lyon, the ideal location for the Half and Marathon which is taking place in central Lyon. Lyon accommodation is filling up really quickly and we had to make a quick decision and a firm commitment to move things on. There are other rooms still available (only 5 Twins though) at these apartments and can be booked on Booking.com, with a free cancellation for a small fee. The rating on these rooms is excellent (8+ out of 10) I am happy to secure more rooms here, (or other rooms close by) if I have the firm commitment off other club members. ASAP. They are currently £224 or £248 per room, with free cancellation (13th to 17th). I will only book if you contact me. We haven't booked any travel yet, but the preferred route is flying from Birmingham. I personally will be competing earlier in the week on the track therefore going over for 10 days and linking up with Dave and Mike from the 13th to the 17th. Our good member Veronica, living in Bedfordshire has also offered club members the chance to stay overnight and travel direct from Bedford to St Pancras to join the Eurostar, should members wish to travel by this option, thus making that route an easier and simpler journey. Entries close in June, but the most important task is to book accommodation and travel first, as it is a worldwide event attracting not just European interest. Please make a decision ASAP should you be thinking of joining us.

Since the previous blog, further members have booked into the same apartments the Quality Suites Lyon Confluence.(Ralph and Judy Davey and Veronica Singleton and her husband Peter) Veronica and Peter are probably flying from Luton and have still offered their hospitality of an overnight stay to any Les Croups members, should they wish to travel from Luton by air or via the Eurostar train. Dave and Mike are flying from Birmingham.

Paul and I have just booked flights to Lyon with Flybe from Birmingham from 5/15 August £199 for the two of us. It looks the best option as they fly every day and good flight times. Our track events are 6/7 August and 12/14 August. Just looking into booking the apartments next.

Closing date tomorrow, 2nd June 2015. Just checked the opposition for the Half marathon, https://www.lyon2015.com...tion/already-registered/Quite a range of nationalities in the M65- French, Colombian, Russian, Belgian.... , 32 competitors at the moment, .... including our own Master - Sandy Johnson. Nothing like a challenge.

Hold your nerve Mike ! I have never competed against athletes from outside Europe and there are 39 entered so far to go through the heats against in the 400. Plus entries haven't closed yet. The non-Europeans are from Columbia, India, Japan, China, Mexico and America. It will be the biggest challenge of my life ! Bring it on !

I agree wholeheartedly, Mel.
The VLM inevitably has an international entry but this event is far more personal. It's a daunting prospect but getting to the start line in one piece is huge element of my preparation.
An occasion to savour.
