Best of luck everyone doing The 2013 OMM - on our doorstep this year

Wouter and I have a place (Medium Score) but have had to withdraw - entries are fully transferable (I/we can edit the 'team details' on-line)

Bad news first - I've got a partner, Paul Dawes from (our nice neighbours) San Domenico RC. In order to match my level of fitness, Paul has to put on 3 stone by Saturday and learn how to walk and whinge with a limp. He impressed me greatly at the 2006 OMM though (my first) where he partnered Graeme and packed custard and a small down-feather pillow in his pack. Oddly these are still not included by the organisers on the 'mandatory kit list'.

But also good news - the weather - it's looking truly awful next weekend, Gwent League Pontypoolish even (not that I'd know), or 'Classic OMM conditions' to quote the web site. Any drought stricken sub-Saharan state need only host an OMM to counter the effects of climate change. In theory cr&p weather, or rather cr&p vis, offers a modicum of hope to those who think of themselves as 'navigators'. If only I could..

But the even better news is that there is still a team entry going spare in Medium Score - and I have a spare tent. Will email the organisers COP tonight saying its not needed if no takers..

((Any others doing? Have spotted Nick and Caroline, plus Jemma and Phil in the start list))

in view of the torrential rain on the OMM course it is rumoured that bog snorkelling gear is now mandatory for competitors.

Hi Denis! You'll be missed.. I don't mind wallowing in bog. It's the 12 hours 'sleeping' in the stuff it at overnight camp that troubles me. I've had five (stunning, weather wise..) MMs in a row where the waterproofs have remained largely unused, something to be annoyingly carted around in a rucksack. And as someone convinced that statistics have cognitive capabilities (i.e. a memory) we must be in for a meteorological bashing this time, the law of averages all sent to extract soggy, tent ripping, revenge. I could mention (but am still trying to forget..) the overnight camp Lowther Hills battering (2007?) you, G, Paul and I had (battling to save the tents during the night and awaking in a flooded field the morning after to find that ~half the competitors had given-up and gone home).

This remains my best (only?) race tactic for a top 100 MM finish..

Local knowledge is worth a lot over 2 days.
Trecastle is the start venue, so its either north over the army ranges, low rolling hills, hope they are not shooting at the same time ! or south towards Cray reservoir, very boggy not many tracks. No doubt once up Pen y fan, sounds like you will have a great w/e and I wish you all the best and everyone else who's running it

Cheers Roy (and good luck on the Sugarloaf) - the possibility of us being sent North never even crossed my simple mind, but you may be right. The OMM (unlike other MMs) seems to specialise in MoD terrain and bog (rather than rock). Packing tonight, a rusty coin has also dropped - with mild weather forecast and no dreaded 6-8 hour 'staying awake' M6 trip back from Scotland/The Lakes (so a sleepless/cold weekend not the end of the world) the misery threshold can be raised with minimal kit carried - provided one of my kids doesn't mind dropping off a takeaway Saturday night..

Don't take this as gospel but I have been told that the event is located in the BBNP. If true the military ranges would not used and my hunch is that most of the event would be on The Black Mountain.
Severe rain is forecast there tomorrow so the ground will be nice & damp. The mild weather makes it likely that it will be pretty misty on the hill so you will get a good opportunity to hone those route finding skills developed on previous OMMs.

Yes Tim I remember those Scottish OMMs all too well, not to mention Elan Valley a few years ago. Andy Cleves & I did that OMM & ended up running about 4 miles along a road to avoid a miserable 2 mile yomp over featureless bog where even walking was difficult never mind running.

Anyway good luck at the weekend to all OMMers and I hope the choppers wont be called in to 'rescue' you this time!

I am sure we will be tucked away in some sheltered spot!
Our guess is that we will be using the same area as the last time the OMM was in the Beacons, nice and boggy!

Don't think I'm ever going to persuade my other half to do this - he's aghast that his workmate (Matt) & his wife (Vanessa) are having a child-free weekend of fun at the Brecon Beacons OMM.

Maybe next year Karen? One day I'd like to do with one of our kids - they're too sensible though..

Caroline - only just noticed on the OMM website this review of the ecology of the terrain we'll be passing through (and stomping all over).

Looks like your right (2004 revisited) - kindof gives the game away in terms of where we'll be heading

Good luck Nick, Caroline, Tim et al (and Mrs Nurse in particular). All this OMM talk almost makes we want to dust off my fell shoes.

Mini race report (lazily cut and pasted from FB)

- Another classic OMM with some truly horrible weather and lots of slippery stuff in the W.Beacons (Black Mountain, Llyn y Fan Fawr etc)
- Jen L (Race Director) last KIMM/OMM after a lifetime of organising
- Appalling navigational error by me early on (again..), but we picked up the pace
- I got a little hyperT in the vileness, but this is what happens when you pack light (v.light) and don't carry pork pies...
- Tent flooded at overnight camp (water bed..). I thought of going home, & calling Graeme Donnan for a lift, but we 'manned-up' (as those who don't tend to say), mopped-up, re-pitched.
- Paul Dawes stashed gin (250ml?)and two min-tins of tonic in his r'sack. Paul is now my new best mate. We have so much to learn from San Domenico RC
- Our 2nd day cut short by the storm, so a 4 hour cut-off and advice (that we took) to head straight for the finish, depriving us of more misery
- Met up with Jemma Nurse and Carol Miller at overnight camp and in a 3k sprint through woods to the finish. Both looked very strong after two tricky days in the hills
- Caroline and Nick Dallimore were 20th (?) at midway (we were mid-table ~100th our of 200 Medium Scorers)
- Car rescued from the 'event cap park' (swamp...) by a friendly smiling tractor of the sort familiar to fans of Thomas the Tank Engine. Never drive to a MM without a tow-ring..
- Home & de-mudded 90 mins later (the usual 6-10 hour trek back from the Lake District/Scotland along the M6 not missed!)

Thanks for a fantastic weekend PaulD (and Wouter who entered us originally, and especially GraemeD for the use of his beautiful Terra Nova tent which is in no way trashed/muddy after taking such a battering Unsure)
