She should consider this as character building. When I came last in the bilbao x country in 2010 by about four miles (yes really), I sucked it up, drank about 12,bottles of rioja and got my trainers back on (not immediately after, mind you) and trained harder. These things are sent to test us. Life sucks.

I have to agree with Liz. After coming in the grupetto ( rear end) of the european clubs xc in 1989 as a newbie to the club, I vowed to never again let that happen. I started training properly and never looked back. It was a life changing experience. As Liz said, these things are sent to test us. Sorry to be harsh but don't complain. just get on with it and train.

Good thread - love the reminder of your epic XC Liz - and a 'cart of shame' would work for me (a season ticket?)

Cut-offs would help if someone was thinking "am I in shape to compete in this event" but I'm kindof assuming we all ask that question, checking-out previous race results a good proxy for

I'd flip the question on its side and ask: "How long do I expect those helping-out to hang around whilst waiting for me to finish?"

Faced with a tough Highlander MM course in 2014, and already walking having taken hours to reach the first control point, Graeme and I dropped-out having calculated the radio marshals would be hanging around long after nightfall had we carried on. Depressed and embarrassed as we'd trained for this one (novel..), we returned to the start, drove to the finish, handed over our 'dibbers'. But were thanked for making a difficult day slightly easier (two were helicoptered out by Mountain Rescue)

Race organisers have responsibilities, but so to do those taking part, especially for long distance events - responsibilities to help ensure the safe completion of an event (especially on roads) being mindful that there are others supporting and marshalling, volunteers with other things to do this weekend

There are two parties signing-up to a 'contract' when entering a race..

Speaking of racing slowly I think im in for a harsh dose of reality tomorrow!

Sometimes its a case of sink or swim. If you sink you can either feel sorry for yourself or you can try and learn something from the experience.

No race is a waste of time however you do, its all good character building stuff!

If you ask me in many ways its harder for the slower runners. Smile

Especially when there is only x large t - shirts left! Seriously though I do argee with Lydon thought it is hard on the slower runners particualrly if you find yourself running on your own or being lapped!
