The 2005 one was put back on as it was the 100th anniversary of Cardiff becoming a city, and 50th anniversary of Cardiff becoming the capital, so... Maybe in 2055 we 'll get another one! Only 40 years to wait. I may have just retired by then... I'm sure Martin would be busy breaking the 100+ age category records still though.

We get it back before that if a bid goes in for Cardiff to host 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Evatt - you were in very good company in those very early Cardiff Marathons. Kids as young as 8 ran the full distance, and I found out recently that Justin Chaston, who then lived in Peterston-super-Ely also ran 4 hours plus at the age of 13. If that name is unfamiliar to most of you - Justin went on to represent GB in 3 Olympic Games 1996, 2000 and 2004 in the 3000 metres steeplechase - so it didn't do him any harm. And, doing a bit more namedropping, Rhodri Morgan (former Wales First Minister) finished 126th in the 1983 Cardiff Marathon in 3:01:13 to become the 4th fastest MP of all-time (Matthew Parris holds the MP's record with 2:32).

Mick - You are an absolute mine of information !!!!! A couple of things :-
1) Those young kids were probably from Ely and on the run from the Law....... 2) I always thought Justin should have been on the pages of a catalogue selling menswear rather than in spikes on a track......(Google him......you'll see what I mean !!!!!) 3) Does anyone else think that Rhodri Morgan looks like Doc Brown from the 'Back to the Future' films ???? 4) Matthew Parris only started running so he could chase after men in shorts............

For those of you who are really interested, here are the leading positions in all Cardiff Marathons back to the first Western Mail race in 1981.
Cardiff Marathon 15 Oct 06 Men 1 2:29:39 (2:29:38) Mark Roberts (WAL) 12 Apr 1970 2 2:33:09 (2:33:07) Phil Parry (ENG) 31 Jan 1963 3 2:34:53 (2:33:35) Julian Baker (WAL) 23 Nov 1968 4 2:38:04 (2:37:58) Tony Duffy (ENG) 26 Jun 1956 5 2:38:22 (2:38:21) Steven Rees (WAL) 08 Dec 1977 6 2:38:40 (2:38:28) Michael Blackmore (ENG) 11 Jul 1975
Cardiff Marathon 15 Oct 06 Women 1 2:58:41 (2:54:56) Michelle Awuye(ENG) 05 Mar 1974 2 2:59:41 (2:59:39) Helen Fines (ENG) 11 Jul 1973 3 2:59:53 (2:59:48) Lizzie Clifford (ENG) 18 Nov 1967 4 3:02:53 (3:02:43) Jenny Moore (ENG) 28 Aug 1964 5 3:06:15 (3:06:13) Kerrie Wood (ENG) 08 Jan 1966 6 3:06:20 (3:06:19) Emma Gooderham (ENG) 20 Feb 1971
There were 1246 finishers.Gun times quoted first (chip times in brackets).A couple of anomalies above. I happen to know that Julian Baker lined up at the wrong end of the field, and spent most of the first few miles weaving his way through! I can only assume that Michelle Awuye did something similar!
Cardiff Marathon (inc British Masters Champs) 09 Oct 05 Men 1 2:29:14 (2:29:11) Neo Molema (SA) 29 Sep 1976 2 2:29:28 (2:29:28) Steve Cairns (SCO) 03 Nov 1967 3 2:34:01 (2:34:00) Julian Baker (WAL) 23 Nov 1968 4 2:38:29 (2:38:27) Alex Rowe (ENG) 10 Apr 1957 5 2:39:14 (2:39:10) Gareth Thomas (WAL) 06 Dec 1964 28 2:51:27 (2:51:21) Mick McGeoch (WAL) 15 Aug 1955 32 2:53:59 (2:53:54) Godfrey Rhimes (ENG) 22 Jun 1953 36 2:55:15 (2:55:13) Adri Hartveld (HOL) 07 Oct 1959 Cardiff Marathon (inc British Masters Champs) 09 Sep 05 Women 1 2:56:51 (2:56:47) Victoria Perry (ENG) 25 Nov 1957 2 2:57:29 (2:57:23) Helen Dyke (ENG) 20 Aug 1973 3 3:03:24 (3:02:54) Helen Fines (ENG) 11 Jul 1973 4 3:06:21 (3:06:12) Lucy Knight (ENG) 23 Jun 1988
There were 1337 finishers. Gun times quoted first (chip times in brackets).
Cardiff Marathon 03 Oct 04 Men 1 2:28:45 (2:28:33) Julian Baker (WAL) 23 Nov 1968 2 2:36:32 (2:36:31) Howard Parsell (WAL) 13 Nov 1960 3 2:38:37 (2:38:34) Tony Duffy (ENG) 26 Jun 1956 4 2:40:08 (2:40:07) Steve Watson (ENG) 20 Nov 1963 5 2:42:41 (2:42:38) Peter Russell (ENG) 12 Feb 1953 6 2:43:04 (2:43:02) Gareth Thomas (WAL) 06 Dec 1964 7 2:43:23 (2:43:21) Mick McGeoch (WAL) 15 Aug 1955 10 2:47:46 (2:47:44) Godfrey Rhimes (ENG) 22 Jun 1953
NB When the results were released, Julian Baker's Chip time was quoted at 2:28:45 and Gun at 2:28:33! To my mind, 2:28:33 is the more sensible.
Cardiff Marathon 03 Sep 04 Women 1 2:53:47 (2:53:45) Ruth Pickvance (ENG) 29 Sep 1961 2 2:56:32 (2:56:29) Victoria Perry (ENG) 25 Nov 1957 3 3:02:00 (3:01:57) Venessa Mulholland (ENG) 21 Jul 1976 4 3:03:20 (3:03:16) Heather Foundling-Hawker (ENG) 26 Jan 1966
There were 824 finishers. Gun times quoted first (chip times in brackets).

Mick do I take it Keith is your brother? I think I've seen him at the club a few times in the past. Graham was good impresive time. There are a few other names I've heard members talk about, such as Berine Plain. In the 2002 marathorn I am right in thinking the course was short. Alot runners didn't care thought! I know there was alot of argucing about the marathorn that year. I know I did London that year and I did Cardiff 15 mins faster which I was told was unusual. .

Thanks, Tracey - Keith is my brother (now 64) with an impressive marathon best of 2:27:21 but perhaps an even more impressive 800 metres best of 1:55.4. He was (and is) quick and multi-talented. The controversy over the 2002 race wasn't that the course was short, but that they allowed the slower runners to take a short cut which meant only running 20 miles. It's a bit like only running 5 miles on a Thursday - you wouldn't do that, would you?

You're welcome Mick. I remeber now not everyone ran all the up the by pass but there was no marshals there anyway and they didn't pull people off the course when they should of. I was abit miffed as I ran the whole the course, promise I did. MIck I never cheat or take short cuts, I mean what's the point you're only cheating yourself! Nothing wrong with running 5 miles on THursday especially when you're assiting slow and new runners.
