Is it time Cardiff had a full marathon incorporated into the half ? PS when was the last full marathon ran in Cardiff ? Edited by user 01 March 2015 20:06:11(UTC)

It was started as a full marathorn but it was never well organised as the organisors would not listen to those who were in the know. They had serveral courses including a two lap course when the half marathorn was started. It was a b****r as you either past the finish line of the half marathorn or the stadium emterance to the finish line knowing you had to the same loop again before finishing. I think I did every full marathon untill it was scrapped. One year the masters had their marathorn championships in Cardiff and I came 4th in my age group. That was when Mel took over and it started to get better. I think the last time was around 2005 or 2006. Lots of people would tell me that they would do the marathorn if it wasn't a two lap course. I still think it's a shame that we haven't got a full marathorn like London but glad that we manage to keep hold of the half marathorn and that there are proper people in charge. Cardiff had full marathorns in the 1980's. In 1984 it went pass my street in Llanishen and I remember seeing Jimmy Savelle(!) running pass wearing gold shorts and with loads of body guards. I was 14 then if anyone had told that I would run 14 marathorns I won't of look at them funny as I could just about run 200 meters! Mick or Jeff are good people to talk about the Cardiff Marathorn in the 1980's. Even if they didn't run it they would problaly would know about it and maybe have the results - Mick keeps everything. I believe Barry also had 10ks and half marathorns, but I will stand corrected if I'm wrong. I know Barry had a good challenging but very popularly 5k. Edited by user 01 March 2015 20:47:06(UTC)

I ran the 2002 x2 lap course (my very first marathon) which was very lonely as it included a stretch up the A4232 from the bay upto Colverhouse roundabout almost and it was sooo lonely... and going out it was one long hill upto a lonely cone in the middle of the dual carriageway.... Have I said it was lonely... Actually I remember Phil George saying this was his very first marathon as well, turns out he clocked 3hr 57 I think and I clocked 3hr 58. Spooky!
I also did 2005 which was the 2 lap version finishing in the stadium. That was alright apart from the last mile which included the old cobbled path with huge gaps between each cobblestone going through the park down to the castle, that was a freaking nightmare!

I also recall the 2005 edition. Particularly the cobbles, and then having to climb the steps through the stadium away from the finish line.

Be fab to have a Cardiff marathon again. Perhaps one to muse over with Run Wales. I'm sure they'd consider it if profitable, post World Half championships 2016.

There is very little chance of there being a marathon in Cardiff, the council will not allow ant extra time for road closures, they are trying to open the roads before we've finished the Half Marathon. Also the problem expands to using a decent course, which is not easy, Cardiff isn't big enough really.

It's possible for the Velathon though, they're having full road closures - though it's a 7am start for the mass participation race, and a 5/6 hour cut off. Perhaps that's the answer - take a marathon route well out of Cardiff to include Barry, or Caerphilly, something like that, and to have a much stricter cut off. Appreciate what you're saving though Phil. We are a small city and our roads are now congested and busy. Sounds like it would be more work to plan than Run Wales think worthwhile.

Back in the 80's I think the Cardiff Marathorn went out to Barry. As for going over to Caerphilly You have to shut down the A470 or go over the mountain passed the Travellers Rest. Most marathorns have cut off times just some are more stricter then others. London allows you 8 hrs after 5hrs they have to allow the traffice through, if you are going to take longer than 8 hrs you can still compete but you have to provide your own support and there's no guaranete there will be anyone at the finish line. The longest someone took to do the London marathorn was a week but he was wearing a deep sea diving outfit! Edited by user 02 March 2015 17:04:32(UTC)

London marathon, yes Edinburgh marathon, yes Belfast marathon, yes Cardiff marathon, no I Know a lot of work would have to go into a setting up a marathon in any city where ever it might be. I may seem flippant in my responses but if there is a will there is a way, of that I am sure. Be the problems from the Highways, Police, local council, some one from each of those Cities above ( except Cardiff ) has overcome the nay sayer's and succeeded. I respect the advice from experienced RO,s and probably don't fully understand ALL the issues involved, it just seems a shame that our city does not have a full marathon Edited by user 02 March 2015 19:24:06(UTC)

I enjoyed the early marathon route to Barry and back. Starting in Cardiff in the cold and rain. Then 30c and sun as u approached Barry!! Plenty of water and sun screen stations organised by Mick. Those were the days...

I forgot one year I almost beat Mike Murphy, I didn't realise until he told me. That was the year it went pass the sport centre in Sophia Gardens.

I ran the first Cardiff Maraton in September 1981. It started in Kingsway and then went the length of Cowbridge Road and out to Culverhouse Cross, along the Wenvoe Road And into Barry. Following the main roads into and out of Barry turning right at was is now the McDonald's roundabout and through Sully, Lavernock,Penarth to the Beefeater Roundabout, along Penarth Road, Corporation Road, over to the Docks, James Street, Bute Street, crossing Newport Road. Onto City Road turning into Cathays Terrace back to King George V Avenue and finishing outside the Temple of Peace in Cathays Park.
I it ran for another 2 or 3 years on that route I think before changing and then disbanding for a few years.
I still have the race results - won by Bernie Plain. Mick probably has more details in his running museum.

Can you imagine the chaos if those roads were used now - unfortunately it seems we've become victim to the increase in population living here and traffic that comes with it. Run Wales would only take on a marathon if it were seriously worth it financially in balance with the time/effort/energy they'd have to put in to organising it. You never know though, sport has an increasing importance and prowess these days so it may happen! Just hope we're all still fit and able to take part when it does!

I can't see why it can't be out on the roads early and then back on the taff trail when the field has spread out. Minimal road closures and a very pleasant return trip into the city!

Gary Hyatt - I was in that race !!!!!! 4 Hours 52 minutes. I was 12 !!!!!! Didn't go to school the following day because I couldn't walk down the stairs !!!!! Lol.

If I remember rightly the first one was sponsored by the Western Mail and wasn't held under AAA Rules. You have to be over 18 nowadays. The reason behind me doing it was that my Dad, my Grandfather and my Uncle were doing it and nobody told me I couldn't do it. So I did !!!! Thinking back, I don't think my parents liked me all that much !!!!!! Lol. Allowing me to do a marathon at 12 ??? Someone get Childline on the phone !!!!!!

There was me pancking that I would be asked for ID when I went to collect my number for my frist London Marathorn in 1998!
The age limits for race are as followed unless I'm mistaken:
10k 16 years
half marathorn 17 years
marathorn 18 years
ultra 21 years ( some ultras do have very strick entery rules)
Altthough I do remeber that 3 year old kid in India running ultras, luckly the authorities got involved as his coach keep saying he enjoyed it but would not allow him any drinks untill he had finished! Sorry Evatt!
