70,000 runners completed this 200 obstacle last Sunday. It is the biggest and most challenging obstacle race in the UK. Every the orgainsiors change the obstacles so not two races are quite the same. If you have never done it then I recomded it. It one of those races that like London has to be done at least once. However, it is not cheap and the entery fee goes up every month ( to keep the numbers done so the orgainisors say) Be prepared to get very wet, muddy and cold, but there hot showers and drinks afterwards. The Gwent League will never be the same again!

That is an awful lot of runners. With start prices at £100 - £150 a lot of money.

Having done this, I can assure you that they are solely concerned with making money, not keeping entry numbers down. It is a great event, but an absolute rip off.

Sorry that you think it's a rip off Oil but the price has gone up since I did it. The profits from the race are said to go back into the farm where it is held as they help disadvantage youngsters. The organiser is a guy called Mr Mouse I believe.

I'm a Tough Guy!!
I've completed both the summer and Winter courses and absolutely loved it. The atmosphere is superb and the obstacles are colossal.
Yes it is pricey, but it does cost to hold an event like that (maintaining the obstacle course, safety and marshals) and there are numerous charities supported. If you check out the website, you'll see that early entry is £49 and the more often you compete the bigger the discount on that price too.
Don't diss Mr Mouse.
Be a Tough Guy.

I'm a winter and summer finisher.
the first time I attempted this I put my foot through the pontoon, as a result I bashed my nose. It was seriously cut. so they threw me off the coarse because of the risk of infection, as it is rat infested.
I had to go to the first aid post. it is a huge room. they wouldn't let me out of there until I had stopped shivering. they ply you with as much hot tea, soup, coffee as it takes. there are loads of people in there getting seen to.
the first aiders are a busy.

for those who've not done this the winter event starts with aprox 7-8 mile x-country with one part is like running up and down castle coch hill about 6 or 7 times.
then the obstaclesis an overgrown army assault courses. there are zip slides that you will fall off and end up in water, there is walk the plank where you will drop 10 or 15 ft into water. the water isn't ankle deep, waist deep, it's over you're head deep. not to mention....
this is not for wimps.
p.s. the organiser is an ex army officer. he hates runners, he has the price so hi so you don't do it.
he also takes on old donkeys and other animals that have been abandoned.

In the army they make you run the assault course whether you like it or not, and you don't get hot soup/tea or a t-shirt at the end just a gruelling march back to the barracks.
To charge £100 plus to compete! As the saying goes where there is muck there is money.

Clearly this is a tough obstacle race that has nothing to do with the sport of running. A runner who wants to be tough can sign up for mountain fell races, mountain marathons and ultras. Now that is something genuinely to be admired.

Obstacle races are becoming more popular, so much so there is a magainize dedicated to obstacle racing. Sometime it nice to do something that bit different. A tough runner is someone who finishes whatever race they sign themselves up for be it The Race for, London Marathon, Barry 40 or Tough Guy. Don't really put any race or event down until you have done it. Granted some races aren't for everyone but the challenge is there for anyone wishes to take it up. I don't think I could do the Barry 40 but I won't put people down who have done it or say that it has nothing to do with running

It is still a running event, there is a lot of running. And it is a rip off, the entry fee is high, it costs extra to start at the front, extra to park your car, even extra if a spectator comes to watch! There's nothing tough about spending a lot of money. They won't care if you're a runner or a non runner if you can pay.
It would be a lot cheaper if all these macho competitors just pulled their pants down and compared ball sizes instead, as that's pretty much the tag line of most of these events.
Any event that needs to describe itself ("the toughest race on the planet" etc), probably isn't what it says.
Each to their own though.

It's the same as any event you have to pay to enter. You see how much it costs and decide if you want to do it. If you think it is rather expensive, you have to decide how much you want to do it. But there's no need to question someone else's decision to do so.

Well done to anyone who has given this a go. Or any event for that matter.

I don't believe I did question anyone's decisions to enter Michael, I was giving my own opinion, which I am entitled to. As I said, each to their own.

it's only a rip off if you want to do it and aren't prepared to pay the price.
you have to go there and see what goes on there.
it is the best event you could go to just to walk around and watch.
