I just wanted to put this out there. If we got a team of 8 together (plus reserves) we could run 3 hours each. It would clash with the Cardiff 10km though. What do you think? We must have 8 people in the club crazy enough to do it? Its a way of being involved in an Ultra without having to actually run all of it.I thought it would be great for anyone considering one and loads of time to prepare too. Not naming any names but we have got some very strong long distance runners in the club who would thrive on something like this and could support the less experienced runners.Plus we could win it! Lyndon your enthusiasm is amazing. I am a big fan of ultras and they are an amazing voyage of self-discovery. The important word is context. In the context of your own running career, you're about to embark on your first marathon in 3 months time. Marathon is not everyone's cup of tea, however well prepared athletes are. And yet, without having done a marathon, you want to enter an ultra, and get 7 other runners to do the same?
Last September you achieved a significant breakthrough at the Cardiff 10 km, and were rightly elated. I would suggest those sort of distances are where you short be targeting your energies - or shorter - definitely not ultras. You're still young - and fast twitch fibres can still be developed when you're a thirtysomething. And if you want to maximise your potential, develop your speed first. Running ultras, without a long background in the sport, and early in your life, is a recipe for disaster.
What I'm suggesting of course, is really none of my business - feel free to do as you choose. Of course it might be a real experience. It's also a big risk!

Cheers Mick I always value your opinion and would be a fool not to. Don't forget though that I am only sugesting running 3 hours each so technically it is easier than a normal Marathon. You could run for 24 miles for example if you were struggling and you would always have your team mates on the side of the road every 2 miles giving support.Its like having a feeding station and mental boost every two miles. I think the camaraderie would be great to! I think it could even be something that would be a good stepping stone towards running a full Marathon. It would also give a flavour of what its like to run a tough Ultra. Its sort of dipping your toe in the water without the massive risk and daunting task of atempting to run for 24 hours which I wouldnt dream of! I just thought it was something different. You could just bring a tent along and when you were not running just enjoy the atmosphere. They said you can run for free if you run 188 miles in the 24 hours on your own which is really nice of them!

It was only my opinion, Lyndon. There's actually a lot of people entering events like this - and I wouldn't be surprised if they got a large entry. It all depends of how you see things (not me) and what you want to do. I always see things in the long term. I often see athletes with relatively short careers - sometimes as a result of short-term thinking. We only have one body so I always encourage caution, coupled with gradual progression and consistency as being the keys to success.
