Where did you find the route James? I can't see a link from the home page. There is a flattish cycle path between the two cities, but I'm assuming this is roads rather than cycle path?

From the end of Feeder Road until you drop down into Bath city centre that is more than a bit undulating, could be a difficult one.

I've just entered this one. I like point to point races, they used to be very popular e.g. Newport to Tredegar 22, London to Brighton. The Edinburgh Marathon of 1999 (never repeated, due to funding) was also point to point, from Dunfermline to Meadowbank Stadium. All these races were undulating. Having not finished my last marathon in Budapest due to hot weather, 9.00AM on 25 October in the UK sounds more conducive and it's near enough to home to attract a lot of local interest.
The race may be expensive but if there's no accommodation cost, it could work out relatively cheap overall.

If Mick is doing this race then it must be ok. Most races are expensive particularly if a charity is involved. You need to decdie if it s worth the entrance fee. The most expensive race I've done was Tough Guy which went up every month but they did that to keep the numbers down otherwise there would be too many to run the event safely. But it's worth doing once.

That's very kind of you, Tracey. Before you sign up, don't forget it is in same weekend as Snowdonia - unless of course, the appeal of doing two "undulating" marathons is too much for you. And Dublin is the next day (I expect). New year is a great time to consider your options and give yourself something to target, but it's worth considering all available options first before coming to a decision.

Tempted to book an autumn marathon. Haven't run 10 miles for 10 months, probably wont until March (unless I try the Handicap). How long to get Marathon Fitness from a poor base?

Andrew, you can't be any more unfit than I am/was ... My answer to how long it would be ... It's dependent on what your goal is... if you are happy with the mere idea of completion (as I am at present) then I'm of the opinion that building up the mileage to complete the distance is achievable in 4ish months. I'm quite sure others would beg to differ....

That said, I personally am not about to enter a marathon, after 16 ish months of not running. I hope to goodness to be in a position to run a marathon in autumn 2015 or spring 2016, but am being (far more) sensible (than usual) and taking it in smaller chunks... depending on how Lliswerry 8 goes, I'll consider handicap 10 etc. That way I'm not setting myself up for failure, nor wasting my money (enough race fees down the drain in 2013). HTH.

Good question Andrew. I would suggest a period of 6 months. We all have different levels of natural fitness and recovery which are indeed the fundamentals to consider when training. I therefore believe you need at least 3 months to build up a mileage base for which you feel comfortable. Following this period, you might want to then consider longer runs with an increase in weekly mileage. It might help to keep a training log as this will indeed assist not only with a review at 3 months, but more importantly training onwards. Good luck.
