Hi all. My Xmas present this year will be a gps running watch. I am going for a garmin and think the forerunner 10, the most basic model, will do me just fine. However be keen to hear what the more advanced models offer and what apps you take advantage of. Happy christmas all!

my thougts are..

I use a Garmin 220. I find very quick GPS, fast charging. In the summer I used the training modes for 2 mile reps, and recovery - and found that helpful.

The wireless sync to my phone - does'nt work with my galxay S3 (or I cannot get it to work !).

Its more expensive. The 610 seems to have as many (and more features), but no wireless.

I wish garmin would allow better charting functions (e.g. change axis scale) and the upload tool is not always perfect.. but i've used garmin for a while now so will stick with garmin for now.

Greg. I have a Garmin 220 too. I'm very pleased with it, it certainly picks up a signal quicker than my old Garmin. I haven't used it for anything more complicated than timing and pace so can't comment on the apps etc. I have to admit I chose it because it had a large watch face and there was a better chance of me seeing the numerals without having to run round wearing my reading glasses - sad times! Always used a stopwatch. Having being a runner since 1997 I never found the need for a Garmier. Never understood why all sudden you need a Garmie to be a better runner. There are a quite a few of us in the club who don't use them. How did runners manged before them? Stopwatches and good old faishoned trainning. Most people I know with them just moan about them.

Im on my second 610 because I just love the set up on them.

As far as the quality of the build is concerned its great if you don't mind the strap snapping, the screen chipping, the back corroding or the screen misting up inside.

I have seen better quality watches fall out of a Christmas Cracker in honesty!

Nice watch to use though.

I'm not sure how many of these issues may have been ironed out on new ones now.

Garmin or other equivalent do help. You don't have to be a slave to it though. All the serious runners like to measure their split times and time training sessions. Also, useful evidence if race times go awry. The older 310 and triathon specific 310xt are good and cheap to buy, noone needs to spend a fortune on these things.

I find a calendar is best for recording my long runs.

It's alright for you Mick your more accurate than a Garmin anyway.

On the few occasions where I have tried to use my brain I have taken off like one of those Evil Kineval toys. I look good initially but you never know when im gonna crash! Blink

Ask yourself what runners did before garmines! And they still set and broke records. As running becomes more and more popular I notoce alot of sports companies bringing out more and more gagets that runners think they need but do they, or is just a way for them to make money from runners?

Each to their own Tracey. Personally I run with no watch sometimes, most times though I use a Garmin. I'm lazy so it saves me having to write down my training, I just plug it in and it's done. If it helps motivate people then that's good surely? Times are faster than they were 20 years ago, just less depth in certain countries, that's probably a cultural/modern thing. I'm sure a lot of the elite runners would have used them if they were around in the "good old days"

Incidentally, Steve Way logs every single run with his Garmin, and I do believe he has a faster marathon time then anyone in this club ever? :-)

Thanks all for the responses. Glad a started a debate whether I need one or not! I agree that it's a shame to complicate one of life's simpler pleasures but for me a feel I need something to help focus my training runs, and if it gives me something else to moan about all the better! When I see you all at a club night I can show you what I got. The suspense will kill you all I'm sure! Thanks again all and have a lovely christmas and a longer / quicker injury free 2015!

Greg, perhaps Tracy can show everyone what she hasn't got, at the same time.

Thank you, Stuart. That's a nice little lead in.
You can come and watch Steve Way at Jenner Park on 8 March.
Unless you want to race him?
