Having managed to cover 6 miles (slowly) without incident yesterday, I'm feeling brave enough to enter a half, and reckon mid/end March is achievable. Hubbie (not a Croups member) also plans to do a Spring Half.

To help with our decision making - please could those who've done FOD tell me if it's necessary to have trail shoes, or if road shoes would suffice (I have both, hubbie hasn't), and also, if it's possible for a non-member to pay (extra) and travel on the club coach, assuming one is arranged?

Many thanks

Morning Karen,

I did FoD for the first time last year. Road shoes all the way as far as I am concerned. It is mainly run on gravelly forest tracks with the odd bit of tarmac. Nothing over grass/mud or anything that needs trail shoes.

As for the bus, I am pretty sure that the bus last year was open to club and non club members. Either way there was plenty of available space so I cannot imagine it will be an issue for you to bring your husband if a bus is arranged.

I will see you there as I have already booked my place in FoD.

Yup, Marcus is right. I've run it three times and road shoes are best. If the weather is dry the whole course is a hard surface (and the last three miles are on stony track). I think you'll both love the race - good atmosphere.

go for it - and enjoy the scenery, camarade and deer/hogs*

my favourite trail race (just one missed and one cancelled since 2003) and I'd do in flip-flops if this were the only option, but have always worn road shoes, other than on those one or two occasions when (and my memory fails me exactly when..) the going was very VERY wet (3 years ago?)

*makes a change from cake

Expect they're stingy with their t shirts! But I'll still do it anyway.

Message for James - at the Committee meeting tonight it was agreed to go ahead with the FoD bus. Sasha has organised this in the past but we don't know whether she will do that again this year, so would you contact her please, and go ahead with the arrangements on the basis of last year. The price to club members and club subsidy was agreed at last year's rate. Non members can travel too, paying their share but without the club's subsidy. I'm sure Sasha will explain all.

The club will subsidise the price of a bus to the FoD half marathon, if there's demand for this. In previous years there's been enough club runners to make this worthwhile. You still pay a contribution and non members, other club runners, friends and family can also go along if there's space and for a higher price. However this year Sasha is not doing the booking, so someone else needs to take this on. Any volunteers for this?

You FoD HM runners are in luck! Sarah Perons has volunteered to arrange the bus. Watch out for her posts with details.

Richard, we're coming straight back afterwards but possibly there may be interest in a social later in the day if you were wanting to organise something?

Could I ask that anyone who's indicated interest in coming on the bus on this thread confirm this on my new "Bus sign up" thread so I have all the names in one place? Thanks very much.

Don't normally stop on the way home. Hoever we normally bring cakes and have a picnic after the race and go when everyone is ready.
