If anyone is interested there is a programme on Tuesday the 9th of December at 4.30pm called "Great Lives" about Emil Zatopec. He is regarded by many as the greatest runner of the 20th Century.

He is the only person to win the 5,000 metres, 10,000 metres, and marathon in the same Olympics( in 1952). Apparently he was a pioneer of the sport and was brutal with his training.

Could be interesting.

I have got to be honest I had never heard of him.Blink

I recall reading about Emil Zatopec being the Mistery Runner at Nos Galon way back. Apparently he was a friend of the Nos Galon race director. It should be an interesting programme about a great athlete.

Just being a little pedantic - it's ZATOPEK.

Lyndon - a lot of athletes past and present say Emil Zatopek was their inspiration but have you any idea who inspired him ???

A bloke from Barry called Mick................

Apparently his track and interval sessions were almost as brutal as the James Bruce ones.

Lyndon, I wish I was so young and innocent on running questions as yourself.
Zatopek was nicknamed the locomotive in his home country, because of his sheer power.
In the 52 Olympics, he not only won the 5,000, (Passing three on the final lap)the 10,000 and the Marathon. He decided to run the Marathon as a last minute decision. Having never competed in one before. He decided to pace Britain's Jim Peters,to see how he would cope, (Peters was the current World Record holder at that time) during the race he asked Jim how he was feeling, Jim then asked him the same question and he said that he thought that the pace was much too easy. Jim dropped out and Zatopic went on for Gold, his third medal of the Games.

Evatt you're always Pedantic and I also fell into the trap by the misspelling Zatopic at the end of my Blog.
Phill, I am not sure of him being the Mystery Runner at Nos Galan, Mick would know.
When I was Welsh Team Manager, I actually met him at the Barcelona Marathon, where he was guest of honour. They gave me a replica souvenir of him, (Half Man - Half Locomotive) I will bring it down the club to show Lyndon.

Thanks for the heads up on the programme Lyndon. But you had never heard of him Blink ??? that's how young you are!! The man is a legend and as Dave says his interval sessions were brutal. Racing was apparently easy after the training he did !! Mel - I had read about that conversation with jim peters in the Olympic marathon. Derek Williams lent myself and Evatt his biography- fascinating, especially for those of us over 40 LOL Jim Peters biography by Rob Hadgraft is a brilliant read and refers to Zatopek and those famous marathons.

Thanks Lyndon And Claire for this. I was wondering whether it was on TV or radio. Worth a listen.
Zatopek was famed for his 40 x 200m sessions, sometimes twice a day .Even harder than your sessions Claire!!

In 1966 Zatopek invited the Australian runner Ron Clarke to Czechoslovakia, and as a parting gift he gave him his 1952 Olympic 10,000 medal with the following words: “Not out of friendship but because you deserve it.”

Some of us went to Bruges a couple of times to run in Vets road champs (20k?). Emil Zatopek was guest of honour at the post race dinner one time and we met him. Lovely man and lovely wife, also an athlete. Somewhere I have a photo of him with my right elbow! Great honour.

Emil Zatopek's Training for Breaking the 5000 Meter Record.
What follows is an excerpt from Running with the Legends by Michael Sandrock. The book details the running lives of 21 runners. The first chapter is about Emil Zatopek. In this section he details his training to break the 5,000 meter record.

Begin Excerpt
In 1954, Zatopek was now 32 and competing for the Dukas Sporting Club. Once more his military superiors called him in.
"Emil," his voice grows low and gruff, imitating an officer. "You have world record 10,000, 15,000, 20,000, 30,000, but no 5,000. 5,000 is Olympic event." The record was 13:58, by Gunder Hagg from Sweden. "Can you get it?"
"Please, allow me to practice in the woods, in the forest, on soft terrain," Zatopek told them, as he had previously when asked to make a record attempt. "Three weeks. I need three weeks. Two weeks very intense productivity, third week, less and less, and then to try for the record."
With time off from his military duties, Zatopek did the hardest training of his life, perhaps the hardest training ever. "I ran every day 100 X 400 meters. In the woods, 400 meters," he whistles, saying "arrhh," and making a face. "Then 150 meters jogging for recovery," he pants, with his tongue hanging out. "50 times in the morning and 50 times in the afternoon. Every day for two weeks. Oh, it was a lot of work." One hundred by 400 meters every day for two weeks-with warm-up and warmdown he was running over 30 miles per day.
End Excerpt

Well, those were some serious workouts, eh? Let me cut the story short for you. He broke the record. After a week of rest, he flew to Paris and ran the 5K in 13:57.2, breaking the record that had stood for twelve years. The very next day he flew to Belgium and became the first person to run the 10K in under 29 minutes. Second place was almost two minutes behind him.

That makes my Km reps down Lavernock look quite literally like a walk in the park! OhMyGod

I think you would have to hate yourself for quite some time to be able to subject yourself to that level of abuse. Either that or have some serious desire to succeed and the constitution of a horse!!Scared

Never heard of Emil Zatopek? That's tantamount to blasphemy, Lyndon!
Don't tell Derek Williams. He used to post on here under the pseudonym, Zatopek, such was his reverence!
As part of your ongoing education, I want you to learn all you can about Parvo Nurmi.
Don't tell me you haven't heard of him either.
I'll quiz you on the next long run.

That's what I thought too Mick re. Derek Zatopek Williams. Everyone should learn about Emil Zatopek, he brings home the real meaning of no pain no gain.
Howard I think I was wrong, it was 100 x 200m reps !! I read that chapter in Running with the Legends too.

A bit more on great runners from the past.
Go to You Tube and insert Ron Clarke Documentary. 38 minute brilliant interview with Barry Davies - all his best races and the famous Emil Zatopek "gift of a gold medal story"
