See Phil Cooks and co's recent athens marathon photos. Made we wonder / think I should look to do new races for next year and beyond.. having a target helps me focus.
. i'd like to do some amazing race that finish in a stadium.. (ideally not marathons).. warsaw was amazing finishing in a stadium.. so was athens..
So what are peoples buckets lists for events ? and what events have you done that have been really special quite often it makes it a special race / weekend by having a great crew with you.. as much as the race itself..
ones i've not done that I may do in the future are that seem like a great one to do.. 1. new york marathon (want to do when i'm 60 if i can get my kids to run with me !). 2. paris marathon. 3. lisbon half marathon. 4. an italian 1/2 m..
But I've not seen any epic 5ks 10ks etc.. that I've not done which I should do on my bucket list..
Ones I've done with are amazing.not in any order 1. Great Wall of China marathon (my favourite marathon). 2. Athens marathon 3. Berlin marathon 4, London marathon 5. Warsaw marathon (only because of my time) 6. boston marathon 7. chicago. marathon my first one.. 8. kentucky derby 1/2 marathon.. 9. indy 500 1/2 marathon. 10 snowdon marathon 11. Louisville 15km..
nearer to home 1. Forest of dean half marathon. 2. cardiff half..(much as i've never nailed it). 3. pentyrch hill race. 4. handicap 10 / 10 mile time trial - i love the distance and the simplicity of the race/ event... and the atmosphere afterwards..
I'd like to put some must do races down for next year.. so curious what others

My bucket list involves two things....I want to compete in the european and world masters track championships, preferably in a country I haven't been to before and I can then combine it with a holiday.

Iron Man.. not sure I can face the swimming training. Bike would be hard but think that is doable.
Man v horse a great race but not epic for me.

The Long Course Weekend in and around Tenby is fantastic. If you don't fancy the marathon then I can recommend the half marathon. Assemble in Pembroke Castle, parade down to the start led by drumming band, challenging and scenic course that is well supported along the route and a red carpet finish in front of the crowds in Tudor Square. The town is packed and there's a great buzz all weekend.
Not sure about bucket list but it's definitely a brilliant experience.

Well James, I can highly recommend New York and I'm sure Claire does as well.
I haven't been in the running game as long as you James so my 'events done' list won't be as long!
Events I've ticked off: 1. New York marathon 2. London marathon (x 2) 3. Dublin marathon (x 3) 4. Cardiff half - the most enjoyable half I've ever done (and will return next year) 5. Connemara half (my first half - its a nice hilly, scenic one out in the west of Ireland. There is also a full and an Ultra) 6. Forest of Dean half was a very nice one also
I've done several other halves but the ones listed are my favourites
On my wish-list (no particular order except for Boston): 1. Boston marathon (something has to replace the NY marathon as chart topper!) 2. Great North Run (just because its the GNR) 3. Amsterdam marathon - James, this one finishes in a stadium! 4. Berlin marathon 5. Lisbon half - I've heard its a good one James so let me know when you're going! 6. Snowdonia - someday! 7. Athens - as you are all raving about it and it's the 'home' of the marathon! 8. Pentyrch hill race - 2015 hopefully! 9. Big Sur marathon - looks incrediable and an excuse to visit the west coast of America!
There's so many to choose from but these are the ones that I would love to do.

Claire, I'm with you on the masters track since I think I'm too old now to start running marathons. The world masters track champs are are in Lyon France this summer !!! However, if I were to run a marathon I think Boston is the iconic race to do, I have read so much about it. James, the Lisbon half is a definite must do, crossing the 25 April famous bridge. It's fast and flat and it's the 25th anniversary next year!!

World Masters in Lyon also includes 10km, half and full marathons. What a lovely prospect running a marathon in Lyon in August. Think we should take the place by storm and have a club trip over there! After all it is usually in some far flung place like Brazil or Australia, so France is very affordable in comparison.

Good idea Dave about the trip but I think track events are more advisable than distance running on the road in August in Lyon, it could be very hot !!!

Sounds like a nice idea but the heat would put me off running the longer distances. The sightseeing would be good though!

Good thread James. You never know when your last race will be - so don't hang around. I would add an off road ultra to the list and would recommend
Classic Quarter 44 miles on the Cornish coast Lakeland 50 (100 is for looneys) Fellsman
Having a wife to take care of all the domestic tasks will give you plenty of time to do all the training (I think I might just get a slap from Claire)

James / all, a local ultra is Brecon Beacons 10 peaks next September, 56 miles of accent or decent with a few undulating bits in between, great fun and plenty of time to train . And you can return home to your own bed before the sun raises its head. What more can you ask for !!! O yes there is also a 38 miler the same day. Edited by user 15 November 2014 17:18:59(UTC)

Richard that certainly deserves a big slap from Claire I really hope Claire doesn't turn into a domestic goddess, although maybe James does because then he may have a chance of beating her in 2015!!
