Quote: Since time began 47 different British male athletes have broken 28:30 for 10k on the road. Thirty-nine of those did it in the 80s, six in the 90s, none in the naughties and two in 2010. What did the 80s have that we don't?

Hi Lyndon
In answer to your question.
I think you will find the eighties was in fact the running boom and suprisingly more competetive than today.
Athletes were indeed driven by the success of other and were therefore inspired to compete at a similar level. There was no magic formula, the approach was basic in going out and running twice each day in all weathers. In other words they were hardened and hungry for success.
Unfortunately, the problem we have today is the standards have dropped off considerably, and although you have some athletes who are able to do well in terms of times, this is still only a small minority to that of the eighties.
I believe the problem today is the sport at club level is not as competitive as it once was and is hence one of the key reasons why the standards have indeed dropped off.

Does 80's running legend Steve Jones have any of the answers? http://running.competito...ning-steve-jones_96859/1Maybe as Jones states here we are overcomplicating things and need to ditch the technology and work off of effort! I'm tempted to go with that in training for a bit as perhaps it is causing self limitation and overworking as he suggests. Edited by user 07 November 2014 14:46:18(UTC)

Many schools today don't promotoe competive sports in the belief that everyone must win! so no traditional sports day. Not everyone can win in fact I believe to win or suceeded at anything you must also learn to lose. I mean look at how many olympic atheltics had to deal with failure before they got their medal. In fact in everyday life you need to deal with failure, something I think alot of kids are not being encourage to learn today incase it damages their self esteem which in fact can make them stronger and more determined. In the 80 it was much harder to get involved in sports as leisure centre weren't as widespread as they are now and many clubs often required people pass their promtion period before allowing membership. If you didn't make a sport team in school then it was just tought and you just acceptted it. You couldn't get out of PE either unless you had a note from home! You also walked everywhere! There was no Macdonals or Turkey Twizzels, you ate what you were given. It's good that there is more opportuntiy for people to particpate but not so good if the standards has slip.

I agree with DJW the standards are lower today then 20/30 years ago. I see it more so when I run in France. In my age category for example, I am well down the list compared to my finishing position in Wales in relation to the number of competitors It could be due to more older gits competing In France. It also could have something to do with me stopping every 5k for a glass of wine, I don't know!! I really don't know !!!!

More people are wasting time on the internet instead of simply running. Incidentally, it isn't just the 1980s - you'll find the same story in the 1970s and 1960s.
