I'm looking at buying a bike for commuting and the odd sportive. Cyclocross bikes look like the best option but are they overpriced because they are the next fashion accessory? Looks like I could spend £100 less to get a similar spec road bike. Maybe the savings on servicing and maintenance due to resilience of the bike would make it worthwhile?

Matt, I think there are two different needs, as the sportive you want a reasonable bike..you wont get much for 100 quid though.. the following does decent second hand bikes.. but not road bikes.. http://www.cycletraining...diffcycleworkshop/?p=559but depends on how fast you want to cycle.. James

I think you misunderstood James. £100 less than so 700 rather than 800. Using cyclescheme.co.uk via my employer.

Hi Matt - in my limited experience I think that you're comparing apples and helicopters here. You need to consider what you will primarily be using the bike for / on what sort of surface / in what weather conditions. If you're going to be using it on rough roads or trails and in all conditions, then a steel / aluminium cyclo-cross bike with clearance for mud-guards and possibly a rear rack may be the way to go. If you're thinking of being competitive in sportives etc and want the thrill of speed, then you'll really need a road bike. Remember the old cyclists adage, the number of bikes that you need is always n+1, where n is the number of bikes that you already have !

Well I was thinking only two sportives a year plus a few leisure rides and training for the sportives. Other than that all commuting. With the state of the roads the cyclocross is the better option.

Matt, you have a mountain bike you can use for commuting. Slick tyres would make it a bit quicker. A road bike would probably be the the better buy, not just for sportives, you could even try a triathlon or duathlon.
