Getting ready for my 2:14:59 in snowdon. Seriouly I'm looking for 3:14:59 in snowdon. So i'm looking for some advice on others that have run it in the past.
I've looked at my 2012 garmin splits and I averaged 9 min per mile over the last 5 due to the hills. In that race I had run a marathon in the previous 5 weeks so possibly on tired legs. I did feel tired so my options are
1. target 3:05 pace for 21 miles 2. target 3:10 pace for 21 miles assuming i'm stronger and fight the hills.
I'm thinking to hit 3:05 average 7 min mile pace. Knowing the first 4 to the top are hilly try and get 7:10 for those , make up for a 1:30 half way point.
Does this sound sensible.. dispite my not quite ideal cardiff half I feel in 2:55/2:57 form (for a flat marathon that is).. so this seems reasonable to me..
Just using this as a sounding board.
James

James the first 5 miles get you to Pen-y-Pass.

I find if you get carried away running down from the pass at 5 mile to Beddgelert at 13 mile, it makes your legs heavier for the second half which I found is harder.Good Luck.

Hi James,
I have never found the opportunity to partake in Snowdon, as I prefer to race at events which are indeed flat. How you actually race will depend on how you are feeling on the day, the weather, and more importantly your approach to the race. My advice is take things easy on the climb section and work hard on the down section. Perhaps if anything you might be able to run with someone whom has a similar pace to yourself which again would be an ideal situation. As you already know there is no simple answer as it comes down to how you feel on the actual day, although I wish you all the very best of luck, and certainly look forward to watching the coverage on S4C.

James You know the route so that should help work out the best way to run this one well. Personally I'd hold back on the first half, especially on the downs, then push on in the second half, there's a fair few relatively flat miles where you can make up time if your legs aren't battered. The last uphill bit is always going to be slow but you've done good training so that will help! Hopefully you'll get advise from someone who's raced this one well, like Nick Dukes. Good luck and I hope you have a good run and enjoy what is always a great event x.

Great post James, Ta for the recommendation libby. James this Marathon is not a race! It's a journey, to find yourself, and pace judgement is more important than a flat fast Marathon would be. I Went to do the Snowdon Marathon in 2011 to run and keep my record of sub 3hrs alive. THE PLAN, run steady up to pen-y-pass, 65th so stu crees said. Coming back down the other side (5miles) I held back, and kept holding back, till 8miles when it got flat. (I went for it) This section was fast for 5miles till we got to Beddgelert (half way)about 30th I was by then, 2mile gradual clime but worked hard up it. Pretty flatish 15-22miles, (25th at base of last climb) feeling good flew up hill passing many walking etc.. cramping a little on the horrific decent to get home 14th 2.58ish. Weather conditions were cold, wind and hail storms to ad a few. James hope this helps mate. nick.

It sort of does.. at 20 mile what were you on for ? e.g. average pace..?
your about 20 mins to 15 mins quicker than me on a marathon 2:40=2:58 (approx for you).. for me 2:57 +18 = 3:15 so close for me !!!
