Gareth,
Thank you for taking the time to speak to me earlier today. I wanted to lodge in writing the purpose of my call so that the issue can be raised within Run Wales/Cardiff Half Marathon.
The Cardiff Half Marathon website specifies times that they feel worthy of a bonus prize. I do not undesrtand why a female attaining the specified time would be awarded less than the male attaining their specified time. If Cardiff Half Marathon believe the times are worthy of a bonus then there should be parity in the prize awarded.
I await a formal response from the organisation and am looking for an outcome that rectifies this discrepancy.
I hope that everything goes smoothly on Sunday and am personally looking forward to taking part in this great event - even though i can't run fast enough for a prize!
Kind Regards
Angela Champion Welsh Athletcis No. 7022453

Completely agree Angela. There should be one set of prizes and one set of times regardless of gender. :-)

Not sure where is this posted on the web site - I could'nt find it. I would note that it seems wrong that they dont have a female +60 vet prize and they do for men..I can think of at least one lady from the club whom may run this year whom is over 60 (but does'nt look it !) , that would certainly be a contender for this prize.
I did notice this list of prizes Male 40-44 Female 35-39 Male 45-49 Female 40-44 Male 50-54 Female 45-49 Male 55-59 Female 50-54 Male 60+ Female 55
Ange,
This is a difficult one, its really important that girls are supported to do sport. As a father of twins (boy/ girl) I do see a differences in how children are approached with sport through school and other activites and it is easy for girls to be put off. And, I'd say at least half of my kids class in year 6 dont do enough sport or dont do any ! If this effort is in support of the encourgancement of more ladies (and as a result) for women/ girls to do sport its not a bad thing. The running club is full of ladies whom are greal role models for my daugher whom she does look up too (but this is not true of general cardiff ).
I'd be intersted in what they come back with.

It is in the section 'Information for Elites' don't know how i found myself looking there! They have designated times worthy of a bonus which is comendable but in my view the prize money should be equal.
Time bonuses: Men Prize Money Women Sub 60 mins £2,000 / £1,250 Sub 67 mins Sub 61 mins £1,500 / £1,000 Sub 68 mins Sub 62 mins £750 Sub 69 mins

Ange - Alex Donald comes into club most Thursdays, and with the race so close will probably be in this Thursday. You seem very persuasive - perhaps you can get him to fill in a club membership form at the same time.

Ange - the actual prizes are the same for the first 6 to finish. The time bonuses are different but then the men have got to run a lot faster to earn them. If there was true equality the times would be the same. I reckon ladies get a pretty good deal as it is! For example - it would be nice to see the ladies play the best of 5 sets at Wimbledon as they get equal prize money! Light the blue touch paper and take ten paces back..................................

I'm not sure its a fair way of doing it but i can see what they done.
The ratio of the total prize money for times for men to women equals the ratio of male runners to female runners. (approx 5000 men runners finishers in 2013 / 3000 approx no of female finishers).. so is that a fair way of doing it.. the numbers / prizes are about a .6 ratio.
total prize for time male 4250 (to break a time) total prize for time female 2500 ratio 4250/2500 ~ 0.6 total male finishes ~ 5000 / total female finishers ~ 3000 = 0.6
is that fair?

James you can argue that as a justification for the race position prizes being different (although I don't agree with that either), but not for time bonuses as those aren't linked to how competitive the race is. There could only be 10 women in the race but it'd still be just as hard to break 67 mins.

If the prizes were awarded based on the amount of finishers then that would be understandable James, but they aren't. They are awarded for achieving a specific time. Therefore they should reflect the effort taken to achieve that time. I am no sports scientist and I have no idea if the following is true, however I suspect that for a woman to achieve a time of sub 67 minutes they are likely to have to be just as talented as a man who achieves sub 60 minutes. I would like to think they would both put in similar amounts of effort to manage those times. If this is the case then Ange is absolutely right and prize money should be equal. Mick makes a point regarding tennis and in specific Wimbledon which awards equal prize money for both men and women even though men play significantly longer matches as they play best of 5. There is a decent article HERE that gives and opinion that I am minded to agree with that says the playing of 3 set matches in Grand Slams is one of the reason Womens tennis is in its current slump and that changing it to 5 set matches in all Grand Slams would boost the quality and respect given to Womens Tennis throughout the world, also taking out the antiquated notion that women do not deserve equal pay for an equal job. I'm with Ange on this one. The women should get the same prize money as the men, even if it means reducing the mens prize money ;)

Prizes and any bonus money - plus the media coverage - should be the same for both genders. It is a simple as that.

Any discussion on Equality is never going to end well. Someone is bound to say something that upsets somebody else. Let's just put the inequality in time bonuses down to the fact that Men are more needy than women !!!! We need to feel like we are worth more because of our insecurities AND BECAUSE WE ARE SO MUCH MORE BLOODY AWESOME THAN YOU LOT !!!!!! Lol.
Mick - THAT'S how you light the blue touch paper !!!!!
(Disclaimer - The above post is a JOKE and in no way reflects my true feelings. Don't want to upset the more sensitive MALE members !!!!!)

As we are far more needy. Can we have equality on the championship entry for london too..e.g. make the age % the same for men and women ? For ladies they need 1:30 half. At my age, this would be a 1:23 half equv. for a man according to the link below.., so if i get this time in cardif i dont need to worry about doing a GFA in london :-) http://www.runnersworld....ls/age-graded-calculatorEvatt, can I have a lift on your train to the cardiff half?

For those wanting to know the outcome:-
"We will ensure that all future bonuses are the same for men and women"
I thank Cardiff Half organisers for their prompt attention and communication.
