I haven't been ill for some time now but people are dropping like flies in work so it almost felt inevitable. I supose the timing could have been worse though! I have had some nasty virus or whatever it is. My last session was an easy 6km last Friday. I felt a bit asthmatic so decided enough was enough and haven't trained since! I am feeling a lot better every day but I can still feel it In the top of my chest. My plan is not to train until I feel 100% clear of it. I'm hoping if I eat well and don't train I may be fit in time for the Cardiff Half. As for race strategy I'm hoping if I can get rid of this in time there is no reason to change anything. Do you think if you have several days off of training leading up to a race it will have a big impact on your time? Is my way if thinking correct?

Impossible to tell from your post, Lyndon. The term "nasty virus" covers a multitude of sins. If you haven't felt well enough to train, then racing seems like madness to me. The deciding factor for me is usually the presence of absence of a temperature. If I'd fell unwell enough to miss 4 days training I wouldn't race. There'll always be other races.

Cheers Mick As I have already missed 3 Half Marathons this year I find it difficult to get my head around missing Cardiff aswell! If I don't feel fit on the day I will very regretfully drop out. I'm aiming to do everything I can up until the last minute to be fit for it! Believe me I have tried everything and am showing a reasonable improvement. I feel physically fine now except for my chest so if I can sort that out I may be fit to run. I have no temperature issue as I'm over the initial symptoms. If there is any doubt I'm just going to have to look forward to the Gwent league. I'm pretty sure if I run right now I could relapse or get Asthma but by the time the Half comes I'm hoping things could be a lot different!

This may seem a harsh thing to say, Lyndon, but the fact that you've missed out on 3 half marathons this year should have no bearing on whether you run this weekend. Your health is easily the most important factor. You're either well or you're not.

I can't help ask - but are you taking enough of your preventer inhaler to get you better quickly? Ali

There'll always be another race to get exited about.

Thanks sensible advice there. I have been taking the brown preventer inhaler but that takes some time to kick in. I think you have to build it up in your system. My chest still feels a bit inflamed and wheezy. I probably should have stopped training a bit sooner. Its a big kick in the teeth as its the first time I have peaked for the event! If I'm not 100% fit I will do the sensible thing. Every time I miss one its just making me a bit hungrier for the next one! It may go full circle now and I will be back preparing for Wokingham again. Thanks for the replies. Good luck to everyone who is running it!

Lyndon, have you considered having a flu jab? You can get them at Tesco or Asda for under £10. Whilst they don't prevent colds at least you know that you won't get the flu. I find that then when i am run down i can give it the few days i need to recover in the knowledge that it can't really develop into something worse. There can't be a neagtive for you to try it and now is the time to get it done for the season.
Hope you do get to run on Sunday but if not then you will have done the right thing by resting.

Totally agree with Mick and Davey. There will be other half marathons Lyndon. There are hundreds of races every weekend and the gwent league next weekend. Your health is by far the most important issue. I suffer from asthma myself and a virus always makes it worse. If you haven't been training then racing seems a mad idea!! Not training won't affect the result as you are very fit, but being ill will obviously affect your performance. Also, you have to weigh up trying to race when you have a virus with the after affects. You could even feel worse afterwards and it will delay your return to training next week?

I almost smashed my knee cap in with my Hurom juicer trying to get it off of a unit but luckily it was just a little knock. It made me realise how lucky I am so was perhaps a blessing in disguise! I have come on leaps and bounds since last Friday! So much so I intend to do the club 7 tonight at an easy pace to see how things are. The inflammation in my chest seems to have gone right down and my breathing isn't far off normal. I'm convinced I have seen the virus off! I have used an arsenal of anything with any type of scientific basis and it seems to be doing the trick. I will see how things go tonight and I'm hoping I can go on to have a good go on Sunday. I'm going to carry my inhaler in my shorts. I have had 5 days off training and an easy week before that so I'm well rested. 3 days light training and I hope I will still be able to perform a bit come Sunday morning!

In the last 2 miles it felt like I was going to pull a muscle in my left leg and today I'm hobbling around like an old man! Still very glad I ran it though.
