Gutted I couldn't run this today!Just looking at the results and its hard to draw a conclusion. Nick Tulp who drew with me at Cardiff was 12 seconds quicker which could just mean he had a good run. One or two people seemed to run slower.
I haven't really analysed the results but I would be inclined to say it was a bit slower. Was it windy today?

I'd say it is slightly quicker, it was warm today and only a slight breeze whilst running out. Pacing was key today as I was passing constantly from 3k in. Also, it was 15 seconds quicker, not 12, your new target Lyndon Congrats to all the runners today

I have spent the whole year Half Marathon training and haven't managed to run one yet! I'm probably going to need someone to hold me back at the start of the Cardiff Half!!! Well done Nick today's result means you can temporarily stay above me in the rankings. Thanks for keeping it warm for me.

I didn't run this quicker than Cardiff, in fact it was significantly slower... but that was down to me. As Nick said, pacing was the key. PB's were there to be had and looking at the results, many managed that.

First up - well done to Nick Tulp. From what you've said - that's absolutely the right way to run it. And just like the Scottish vote on Thursday, there will be people who are strongly in one camp or the other. For what it's worth on gun times I was 19 seconds slower today than at Cardiff. Having said that, I'm quicker in both races than I was in 2013, so I'm pretty pleased. Because Swansea is viewed as flat and fast, it's very easy to overcommit - and I did see a few experienced runners run disappointingly as a result. Taking a longer term view - I've done Cardiff 17 times and Swansea 15. I tend to find Cardiff marginally quicker, but my fastest ever times have been at Swansea. I put that down to the greater variability of the weather at Swansea, particularly with the wind. I found it warm today, but if the wind had been from the opposite direction it could have been tough. A great race though - hope you all enjoyed it.

I hated it, struggled all the way every km was painful and I feel like I've been hit by a bus.
The course is fast though and has stunning views, so maybe not my day and maybe a week off needed.

I did not run today for me Swansea is well organised but a 40mile or so drive for a 1pm start just does not work with my family balance.. and i'd say a 1pm start is not great for many runners..especially heavier ones like me ! are not suited to hot conditions starting a 10k near the midday sun does not help the heavier runners...
if it were down to me i'd start the races at 8am.. get them done and dusted..
so a factor is start time.. for some of us..

As a novice, this was my first Swansea 10K & I did achieve a PB of 54:43 which was 12 seconds faster than my time in the Cardiff 10K. I thought the race was well organised, but agree the 1pm start time makes it hard to fit anything in to your day, & it was hot! Also, thought it was more difficult to get past people today than in Cardiff - maybe the start was a bit narrower? It took me a couple of kilometres to relax, & get into my stride!

Just for the record, the following are chip times: Swansea 41:37 Cardiff 41:51 Caerphilly 41:45 So Swansea was the fastest by 14s over Cardiff. Struggled at bit over the last few k due to the heat. Also recorded the highest heart rate finish in a recent race of 164 beats/min, which coincidently matches predicted max of 164.4 from Frank Horwills formula, 214 bpm minus point eight for every year of age. i.e. 214 minus 62x0.8 = 164.4 bpm. |

You can never factor everything in but your post just got me thinking. In a few years time I could imagine a watch that could attempt to factor in all of the environmental factors in the running of a race. When they start running out of gimmicks I could see this happening. Currently if you look at it we don't really look at the full picture, although we always question the details we do little to properly analyse them. Your watch could use the internet for the weather on the day and also factor in the undulations across the route as you ran it. You could even input what food you had eaten, and your sleep patterns with your training data and it could analyse this data to see what was working best! Lydiard always used to say that you should look at what works so why not use a computer to help clarify what works? This could be how the runners of the future do it. I'm sure some of the old school runners in the club would be horrified by such an idea! GPS watches could of course be banned in the future anyway. This could be a revolution in itself as then people like Mick would start beating people like me on a regular basis and I would have to start using my brain which is a bit if a worry.

I have recently ditched my garmin and am running more relaxed and better than before, is that the lack of garmin or my own positivity i am not sure. I am sure that any more stats made available to Lyndon will make our heads hurt with the extra in depth analysis Good luck in Cardiff Half Lyndon :-)

You won't be surprised to learn that there will be even more analysis coming up in the next edition of ACE. Ang - I'm delighted that you've ditched your Garmin. The brain is infinitely more effective! And running, being the primitive sport that it is, sometimes calls for primitive reactions! I mean, of course, making a mental note of runners lining up at the start with complete disregard to the rest of the field, and then making sure you give their arse a good kicking!
