I would be grateful if some of you who have previously done marathons abroad give me some advice on travel insurance i.e. what insurance companies are best for covering participating in marathons? What are typical prices? Thanks in advance.

Insure and Go will cover you for a marathon as long as you are not a professional! Their package would also be good for you for future holidays and adventure. You would be covered for treks up to 6th m and a huge range of activities. Price is reasonable and reviews are good. Hope this helps. Mike

I found any of the regular insurance companies cover marathons for non-professionals. There's usually a list of activities that are not included and for which you have to pay more, such as winter sports. Marathons aren't classed as high risk. Ha! And here's me with my second marathon training related injury

Aine, Have a look at Dogtag.co.uk They cover marathons, ultras and any extreme sports you can think off and they don't look too pricey.

Assuming it's in Europe, you may be covered with a free EHIC card and not need insurance.

My travel insurance last year paid out when I had to withdraw from Berlin marathon - I claimed back the flight and hotel costs. However there isn't cover for loss of race entry fee. For NY you'll definitely need medical cover.

Thanks everyone. I think I'll go with Insure and Go. They gave me the best quote.
