After an absence of about 4 years this popular race returns on August bank holiday Monday at 3 pm. It's a good off road race and good Snowdonia Marathon training. Places are limited, check the San Dom website for more info. Machin not far from Caerphilly.

The Machen race was a lovely race. I haven't run in it since the 80s. Then, we all went back to the Machen rugby club for a drink and free bangers and mash.

There were several local hill races. I don't know if any have survived. The Bedwas hill race (k/a Ras Guto Nyth Bran) was organised by the landlord of the Bridge End pub in Bedwas, and he certainly looked after you after the race - lots of free booze and refreshments.

There was a Gwaelod y Garth hill race, which was part of the local carnival, and the Abertillery hill race. I remember that all too well - as I went off course and ended up just outside Ebbw Vale! Martin Lucas and Les Williams were about to start a mountain search for me as I arrived back at the finish.

One of the best was the race organised by the club's Maurice Prendergast, up Rudry hill, Caerphilly mountain, and the Garth.

Just a reminder that Machen hill race is this Monday at 1500hrs.
If you don't fancy running it Dom is looking for volunteers to help out.

53 runners ran this race 3 from our club Tom/Richard/Kate in wet conditions and very slippery underfoot, not sure of their positions as of yet, but well done to the 3 of you.

Well done to San Dom for bringing this race back to life. The number of marshals was quite extraordinary, and I thought that they were going to outnumber the runners at one point! The new course merely starts by the church and misses out the rather pointless road crossing. 52 enjoyed the warm rain and soft mud. The barbed wire fence on the slippery descent added to the interest. A race organised by our sister club, 20 mins away, cheap and well organised. A candidate for next year's off road series.

Well done to Roy for marshalling, Tom for third overall, Katie for first lady ( on top of running the Beacons 19 miler on Saturday and running to the race with Matt) and all those lovely people from San Dom.
