I supose you could argue that Franks formula is a generalisation aimed at athletes, in much the same way as the BMI scale is aimed at the general public. It may not take everything into acount including your genetic predisposition.

You are never going to get a perfect scale as people are far too diverse for that. I would look at this scale as more of a finger in the wind measure than a bang on acurate blueprint for someone aspiring to become the perfect athlete. A couple of kilos either way probably wont make much difference.

When I go to do a race I make a calculation of what time I would like to run it in based on what I know. That is all this is and I am often a bit out as well.

Height, 1.65 m (5 ft 5 in). Weight, 56 kg (123 lb). Haile Gebrselassie (born 18 April 1973)

5 x 2.495=12.475+50=62.475-10%=56.2275ThumpUp

Kenenisa Bekele: predicted, 52.7, actual 54
Paul Tergat: predicted, 71.1, actual 62
Nicholas Kemboi: predicted, 54.3, actual 50

Any formula that is based around ratios of weight and height is going to suffer from the same issues as BMI.Which brings me back to my earlier point.Although in this instance it is only Paul Tergat that is a wildly out of the ideal weight. In life there is an exception to every rule so you will never find a one size fits all.

I do know however that if proven athletes measure up to or are near to Franks measure then it cant be a bad guide. Unless there is a better guide out there?

It seems that the taller the athlete, the wider the gap, having a linear system above 5 ft isn't right.

As mentioned previously, it's only a guide, but will point out where the majority of athletes fall in the distribution.

Thats probably about the size of it, plus you would need an extremely sophisticated system to account for this!

The 6'1", 160-pound American is the first man over 6 feet and over 141 pounds to break 27. His 13:12 5k PR also makes him the 2nd-slowest 5k guy to ever do it.
Chris Solinsky's 26:59.60 10,000 meter American record from last week was shocking on a number of levels. In running 26:59, Solinsky became the first non-African-born runner to break the 27:00 barrier. Additionally, Solinsky set the record in his 10,000 meter debut.Confused

I agree they are probably underweight on any formula! Perhaps that's why they run so fast?

Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast!

I know what weight i like to be for a marathon and this year i was about 4lbs over that weight whereas last year i was spot on. It ties in with being within the ideal weight range on the BMI chart for my height This formula is roughly right for me even allowing for the fact that i love cake, have i mentioned that before, but seriously i do adore cake.

I was way over my ideal running weight going back 2010 - 2012, I weighed around 77 - 78kg then, but now since over the last year I am close to my running weight as I am around 69.5 - 70.5kg and at 5ft 10.5ins, I really do not want to be any lighter than that, I don't like to be too thin.
