As this race does not clash with Castles this year, I thought it would be a fun and challenging event to enter this year, if anyone is interested in either team of 3 relay or individual entry. You can run 1, 2 or all 3 legs (22 miles in total). All 3 is not for the faint hearted though! Certainly ideal to get away from the roads in hopefully half decent weather in mid-Wales (Llanwrtyd Wells). I'm happy to arrange entries, teams etc.if there is enough interest.

Cheers

Dave

Sounds like fun (not the full 22 miles!). If you get enough interest I would be interested in being part of a team.

May be tempted, just have to be brave as I am petrified of horses (and cows) ! Need to check my tennis league fixtures - will let you know asap.

Thanks for posting this Dave. It always seems to clash with the castles and so I've never done it. It is Welsh, muddy and a bit bonkers and so has to be done. Sadly I'm cycling up hills in France that week. I understand that the results are about 20:1 for the horse over the years.

I must be nuts.. 1 week after the castles.. but I've entered the full race..

I figured it always clashes with the castles but not this year so give it a jolly good go..

Well done James! A friend of mine did the whole thing the same year I did leg 2 of the relay. Apparently, he spent several of the later miles chanting, "I f**king hate this." over and over in his head. There's a suggestion there might also have been some tears. :-D

Afterwards he said it was the hardest thing he'd ever done. I hope the river isn't too much in flood for the crossing near the end. ;-)

There's accommodation in Llanwrtyd Wells but it's probably pretty limited. We drove up and back the same day.

I don't think your legs will be in any fit state to drive home. Maybe you know a willing volunteer that will drive so you can have some of the lovely ales on offer. Did I say "lovely ales"? I meant "lovely rest". ;-)

Steve - your comments on your friend's experience are very similar to mine from when I did the whole thing. Tears were not far away when you get turned in to a long hilly muddy field after about 21m when you think you are on a downhill to the finish. Memorable day though.

Tim - I don't think the victim that year would mind me mentioning that his wife and I pretty much had to hold him up so he could change out of his wet gear at the end. I'm not sure he took his own shoes off. :-) He was fine after 4 or 5 pints in the Neuadd Arms.

James - the video ends near the end of stage 2 where the horses have to undergo a mandatory vet check. There's still a good 8 miles of suffering after that... ;-)

Well done James for entering,I did the race in 1996 and I think the course is the same. The relay is run over three legs and for parts of the course the horses run a different course. We went up on the day but I would stay some where close if I ran it again. P.S. It is a good race.

I ran this even further back than Terry, in 1982. A great event.
