I first heard about this event from Steve Way, who told me he was doing it having won the Barry 40 in 2016. It's a race where you basically try to outdistance every other competitor, the results being determined by the app. you are carrying. In that way runners can compete against each other from anywhere in the world. In a sense, it's the optimum race situation given the current global situation regarding social distancing. It was first held in 2014, and is an annual event. Hence this year is the 7th event. Runners are eliminated from the race as they are caught by the virtual catcher car, which starts pursuing the runners 30 minutes after the start. All the proceeds from the entry fees are for spinal cord injury. 77000 runners took part in this year's event, which started at 11.00AM UK time last Sunday, 3rd May. And the winner was UK's Michael Taylor, who covered 69.9 km in 4 hours 13 minutes, beating twice global champion Aron Anderson (Sweden) by just over a mile. Michael kindly sent me a facebook message yesterday evening. It included a note from his app. which indicated that he went through 40 miles in 3:50:02 - 3 minutes quicker than his course record set at the Barry 40 on 1st March. If you haven't yet read about this amazing performance, take a look at the latest edition of ACE (under Latest News on our website, compete with Paul Stillman's amazing pictures). Michael has already indicated that intends to return to Jenner Park, which will be on 7 March 2021 - hopefully!
