It's that time of year when we start planning our campaigns for the New Year. At the club draw for London Marathon 2020 places, 32 applications were unsuccessful. That can be incredibly frustrating. All that training and no venue to produce a performance. Many races are selling out due to demand. Whenever I ask runners whether they fancy running an endurance race on the track, the majority of responses admit to "not being able to get their heads around such an event, or a perception of boredom" Really? Have you ever been here? Running is a game played out so much in the mind that positive thought is required for any event, whatever the distance. Here are just some of the advantages Barry has over London. Faster course - and flatter - hence faster times. No overnight costs for hotels, or "London prices". Ability to eat, drink and change kit whenever you want. Split times called throughout, giving you continual check on your progress. Fast access to loo by the side of the track - minimising delays. Continual support from the rest of the field and your support crew by the side of the track. Don't just take my word for it. Ask Dave Coles. Now 60, Dave will be running his first Barry 40 for six years, in preparation for the Comrades Ultramarathon in South Africa in June, which he ran 3 times 1984-86 when in his twenties. It will be an emotional and challenging return. But he's not alone. Two years ago Steve Way won here and the finished third in the Comrades, age 43. Entry details on the Cardiff Running Events website. I should say that race day, Sunday 1 March, does coincide with the final round of the Gwent League at Singleton Park, and the Newport Half Marathon.
