Being an obsessive runner I weighed my new shoes and found the difference in weight. I'm sending these back and wondering if these were a bad batch out of the factory. Anyone else ever noticed anything similar?

Yes, Matt. There can definitely be manufacturing variations from one pair of shoes to another of the same type & also from left to right. Your feet might also vary left to right also! I always try standing in new shoes without insoles to see if I can detect any differences. |
Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast!

Yes I'm not surprised, what is bothering me is will the weight difference affect my fitness and/or form? I guess short term it won't but over 600 miles? This is a mileage guideline I've noticed on some websites.

What is 7g as a percentage of the weight of the shoe?
Have you checked for a difference in the weight of your feet?

Stephen I weighed the shoes without being stood in the shoes. No idea if one foot weighs more than the other, I don't want to chop either off to find out . The % is interesting . The heavier shoe is 7% more than advertised weight, the lighter shoe 3.5% heavier!

You can estimate difference in foot weight without chopping them off. Use water displacement technique to get the volume. Would give you a fair idea of a percentage weight difference.

Eureka! I might try that and find the shoes have been custom made for me, probably not, too hopeful to be true.

Kind of the point I was making (although the technique is still valid). 7g isn't a lot. Probably a couple of g difference in feet and almost certainly in legs. You could measure the depth of the heel and find 1mm difference when there's more difference in your legs.
I suppose overall though, you need to be comfortable with your shoes and if they just don't feel right, it could play on your mind and affect your running. Fortunately, you could tie a pair of bricks to my feet and it wouldn't make much difference to my pace. :-)

What's really bothering me is the difference to the advertised weight and the l and r. Only joking about being obsessive Jerome

The advertised weight of any training or racing shoe is based on a size 9, they can't weigh every size and publish it.

Life is way to short to worry about this Matt! Up your training or lose your guns! Easy

More track sessions and long runs agreed. The guns will then shrink. Size 8 I am though should be lighter.

Sent these back after a customer service call from Start Fitness. They exchange for another pair after agreeing the pair are faulty. This means they'll pay p&p so happy days!

My l.foot is at least half a size bigger than my right foot (I'm deferring returning them to my maker though...) Maybe this a new exciting range of asymetrically paired flats designed specifically for hobbly people like me? Loving this one Alan. Pass the popcorn? Edited by user 03 September 2013 18:16:30(UTC)

That's a bit harsh Evatt. Sounds like Matt already has enough problems without wishing that on him. ;-)
