This is a curious records to see how fast les croupiers runners of the past have gone over 10k.. to measure how quick the top runners are..
so have we ever had a member go sub 30 for 10k..
to that matter have any cardiff members gone that fast..
I'd guess mIck, phil at their best may have gone close?

I don't think any members would have ever gone sub 30, even on those short 80s courses!
Mick would have all the stats and what was eaten for breakfast on race morning but he hasn't registered here yet.
I'd guess 30:30 ish would be the club record.

I ran 30:30 but it wasn't for Croups. Mick has run 30:31 but there are a couple quicker than that but I'm not sure if they broke 30:00

To the best of my knowledge Paul Wheeler holds the club record. In 1985 there was a 10km City Centre Series and Cardiff was chosen as one of the venues. It appeared live on TV - 10 laps round the Civic Centre. There was one snag - if you were lapped you were obliged to step off the road. In other words - a bit scary! There were 76 starters and I went through 1km in 3:02 - and was last by around 20 metres. But the object of the exercise was NOT to chase and get lapped! Croups positions were: 25 Paul Wheeler 29:07, 56 Mick McGeoch 30:31, 57 Huw Roberts 30:48. 61 athletes were allowed to complete the course - Dave Lane was last in 31:19. The first 10 athletes broke 28 minutes (8 Brits and 2 Americans - no Africans!) Eamonn Martin set a new UK record of 27:47. Being a new record the course had to be re-measured and was found to be 122 metres short. So it didn't all start at the Cardiff Half of 2010. If anyone ever wants to see this race - I've got it on VHS. It's absolutely brilliant.
To return to the original question - Paul Wheeler ran 29:36 at Swansea Bay 1986. We didn't keep club rankings for 10km in 1986, because we were tough and it wasn't worth getting your kit on for anything less than 10 miles.

VHS Mick M? What is that? It is scary that one has to step off the road if one is lapped. Jeez...and live with the shame forever. Dignity in shreds.

Although Brian was a bit quicker than me, I'm not sure his PBs always reflected this. The fastest of our crowd at Barry and Vale over track 10000 was Pilsy with 30:13. No Barry runner (who subsequently joined Croups) broke 30 minutes on the road, to the best of my knowledge. Loads of us beat 50 minutes for 10 miles, and I think our little ranking list would read something like: 48:41 Brian Matthews 49:03 Paul Howarth 49:18 Mick McGeoch 49:54 Phil Cook 49:58 Martin Haley I reckon Nick Comerford probably broke 50 minutes around 1999/2000 when he was at his peak, as well. We had a very talented set up. And we could drink!

Just an update on the above. Looking at the 1986 club rankings, Paul Wheeler ran 29:12 in Battersea Park. Also, Martin Haley was correct in thinking Brian Matthews had broken 30 minutes for 10km, but it was before he joined Croups. Result of Cardiff 10km on 18 October 1987: 1. Nigel Adams (Swansea) 29:45; 2. Brian Matthews (Barry & Vale) 29:56; 3. Steve Brace (Bridgend) 30:09.
