So this summer I've turned 35. Apparently that makes me a "vetran"; "a person who has had long experience in a particular field" according to the OED. I don't feel my running experience has been long enough as yet to earn me to such a title, though I am just about getting used to my new identity!

I've been reassured that as I go up the age categories I can look forward to more points - well I don't have to complete with those pesky seniors anymore!

So folks, how does it work for our club championships?

I was aged 34 for some races and 35 for others. Do they all count as V35 or only those past my birthday?

Some races seem to appear on both SEN and V35, others do not?

Also the same race is given different points in the two age categories - 95 points in SEN for my attempt at the Brecon 10, 66 points in V35 for the same race- loads less. That throws out the theory of points been easier to score in the vets!?

Anyhow, I'm never going to win the Olympics, just a general query about how it all works.

Thanks all.

In Athletics you become V35 the year after your birthday.
In swimming or Triathlon you are V35 the year of your birthday.
I don't know the reason why they differ.

Thanks Andy.

So from what you say, I am either:

a) still a senior until 2019 (the year after my 35 birthday)
or
b) actually aged 36 already and have lost a year somewhere.

Both parkrun and Les croups results call me a vet.

Now I don't know who I am anymore. 😂

Claire, I think what Andrew said doesn’t apply for our club championships, as when Jon turned 40 last year he got senior points only for races before his birthday in March and points in both seniors and V40 for races after that.

In terms of the “less points” in the V35 category - the senior points start with 100 for the first runner, 99 for second etc., the V35 starts from 70, the V45 from 50 etc.

You may compete as a Master from the day of your birthday at 35 provided you have signed up to both (for Wales) the WMAA and a club affiliated to UK Athletics. Masters competitions operated by Welsh Athletics require you to be affiliated to Welsh Athletics.
