Looking for some pointers.

I was contacted by someone today asking if her daughter could join the club. As her daughter isn't 18 yet, this isn't possible. It's a circumstance that's come up again and again over the last couple of years - 17 year olds (or almost 17 year olds) who've entered Cardiff Half and are looking for a club/someone to train with to get up to the distance. Our 5k+ course will get them part way there. Feedback I get is that clubs like Cardiff AC and Cardiff Archers are competition focused and not endurance based, therefore not appropriate when the goal is to train for a half marathon.

Any ideas? Inside knowledge? Most of the 'social' running groups listed on the Run Wales website are 18+. For safety reasons I'm loathe to suggest she post on the Cardiff parkrun FB page looking for someone to run with.

FWIW, just in case you know of another teen in a similar position, it looks like she runs 5k in around 32 minutes, and she lives just north of Cardiff, and is at school in the Llandaff/Pontcanna area. I've got contact details but won't post them here directly. Ta.

Sarah - the minimum age for entering the Cardiff Half is 17 so I hope he's not as young as you think.

The only clubs in Cardiff I know that take under 18 is Cardiff Arches and Cardiff Athelices. As for your friend Sarah he should not be doing the half marathon until he is 17, he's too young and could damage himself for life. Age limits are on a race for a reason. Although it is good to see kids taking up running they should not be pushed into doing more than it's good for their age, however if he is 17 on the day of the race than that should not be a problem. I remember meeting a girl who use to swim for Cardiff but because she was encourage to do too much her muscles collapsed!
The club did discuse having a junior section but because of what it entailed, DBS checks, insurance etc it was decided not to go ahead.

Thanks Sarah, I'll try and catch up with Dan & Caroline soon, may well work as they're from a similar area in Cardiff.
