James, myself and my family have already signed up for this, so I'll look out for you on the night. We've all been doing this for the past few years and it's a good way to finish the year off! My wife and I are entered for the fun run, our daughter's in the 10-11 year old race and our son's in the elite race this year after winning his last junior race last year! Michael will really enjoy it and will hopefully do well in his age group.

So the big question - enter elite or 'fun run'? In previous years there was some kind of guide (Elite sub 20?) for scary cat jogging ditherers like me.. Can't find nothing on the web site - but fun run sounds like my cuppa'tea?

the results are up A great evening, and special thanks to the organisers, helpers and wise people of Mountain Ash. The fun run was exactly that, especially if, aka me, you like plodding in the rain and don't mind the odd stop & start & risk of a spill - but frustrating & far too congested for those who can run, and were after a time? So my New Year resolution - try and get fit enough to enter 'elite'. Either way I'll be back for the 2014 race..

Tim, I would guess the "elite race" had runners from 22 mins to 30 mins running. It must be a hard balance for the orgnaisers between the "club" runners and the those just wanting to almost walk around. To me its all about respect and moving over when you see faster runners past. I dont see an issue with people being "just lapped" in the elite race provided respect is maintained.. run straight at one side, allow others to pass if they are quicker.. etc.. I always do this at the cross country.. Its almost like they need a senior race / elite race and a club race. With the elite meaning being a fast field.. but i can understand their issue as I was in mountain ash from 4:15 (allowing time for parking etc..) for my sons race at 5:15. And, he was quite fustrated that it was only 600meters.. he would have much preferred 1 mile. Almost not enough time for them.. We waited for 10 mins to escape the rain after the elite race and cross the road, there must have been people at 50/55 mins doing the 5k. Rather fustrating if you are doing a reasonable 5 k time..amd hardly fair to those wanting to do 25/26 mins. Do I run next year or not.. [Also looking at the age 8/9 year old results.. not everyone in the club can do 600 meters in that time.. boy the fast runners were quick..] Edited by user 02 January 2014 13:38:33(UTC)

This an awesome event, I've done it the last 5 years, It's not without it's problems though. In 2009/10 they messed up the course leaving it short. It is very busy now and agree, 3 races may be needed, elite, sub elite maybe, and mass race.
If you're looking for a fast time you can still get one on this undulating course due to the intense competitive nature. The front runners were flying, I didn't want to get lapped.I was looking for around 16.40-45 based on my last race, but ran few secs faster as I had a sprint finished with 3 people! Would be good to see more of the club there next year, good way to finish the year. Enter early though!!!

You may find this interesting - the 1989 programme with the old 6k race route. As might be expected Mick McG gets a cameo role - running up from Cardiff with a message (email not yet having been invented). http://www.peoplescollec...an-races-at-mountain-ash

This people's collection is great stuff - can't believe Mick can't have been in the thick of this little bit of Barry history somewhere. http://www.peoplescollec...d-running-marathons-1982I think there's a place for some red socks in this archive.
