We've been here before, so something of a seasonal moan. And it was a great result for Wales (well done Leigh Halfpenny...)

But our most successsful distance runner of all time, and this year's TdF winner, behind (resp) a chap who rides horses, and one who sails boats?

Do wish the beeb would just rename this the 'BBC Armchair Sportsfan POTY award' once and for all - science has shown it impossible for runners to sit in an armchair for two and a half hours.

We need a 'Eurosport SPOTY'..

Agree with Tim. A guy who sail boats is on the short list!? I'm sure it's a very hard sport but come on, surely this is a minor access sport. Who sails? You have to live by the sea for a start and be pretty wealthy. I know there are other sports which have the same situation, it just seems a bit unfair as other people in other sports have to fend off 1000s to get to the top. But it's down to the public vote any how. Oh yeah, don't get me started on that horse dancing/jumping royal who won a few years ago. A joke!

Yes we had a family discussion regarding this last night, and were asking ourselves "what is the definition of a sport"? I was outraged that Mo and Froome didn't get 2nd and 3rd places! How can you compare a jockey to what these guys have achieved? And surely it's the horse that's fit and does all the hard work?? You don't really want to get me started on thisAngry xx

Stopped watching or caring who won SPOTY of the year long time ago. I have my own hero's and 99.9% of the population don't know them but they are genuine people who really make a difference without any thought of reward.

SPOTY is down to the general public and therefore has little to do with sport itself. People will vote for whatever they caught sight of on the 'telly' in between their take away and their next can of lager.

As the title suggests, its about 'personality' (as portrayed by the media), not just physical achievement. I still can't figure it, (or watch it), Mo still wins it for me. Chess is a recognized sport of the International Olympic Committee. Would this count? (We do have a chess section in the club, but they are quite quiet about it!)

I haven't watched it for a good while but... In their defence, it doesn't say anywhere that it has to be a popular sport, a mass participation sport, an accessible sport, etc., etc.

It doesn't even say you have to be the best in your field. It's just a popularity contest. Democracy at its worst. ;-)

Follow on from Stephens post. The ancient Greeks used to vote people into exile if they got to powerful or popular , now that would be a much better. I for one would join in / watch. Democracy at its best?

Howard my son is Welsh under 21 chess champion and he will argue all day that if darts and snooker are classed as sports, then so is chess! If personality was a factor of who wins SPOTY, Andy Murray would never have won, as he doesn't have one!! Xx.....

If you think Tony McCoy doesn't deserve recognition then you really are biased towards the sports you like, he has achieved everything in his sport and stills keeps breaking records. I for one follow horse racing and would only bet big after looking at who is riding the horse (there's a lot more to it then just jumping on a horse).

Regarding Andy Murray after losing so many grand slam finals and finally overcoming his losses and to capture Wimbledon, I for one think he deserves everything he gets.

He has certainly shown great strength of character, determination etc. That speaks volumes about his personality, even if he doesn't necessarily show great 'media savy'.

Agree, Andy Murray fully deserves the recognition. I also think he's got loads of personality. He's just honest with it, which often means he's moody if he's not playing well. I'd rather that than just saying and doing what looks good on TV, like lots of people with so called good personalities.

What a great thread. Interesting points all..

And I'm being harsh knowing nothing about horse racing (but would it attract the same following without betting/gambling?), and even less about sailing (although enough to know that it can beat the cr*p out of you!)

I think SPOTY should revert to being more of a Sports Review of the Year programme. This use to be the case with the awards a relatively small part of the programme..

So less emphasis on 'who wins the armchair vote' (leave this kind of stuff to 'Strictly' etc), less grovelly eulogising (the 'diamond award' to Sir Alex - zzzz..), less starchy dinner suit glitz (ditto..)- but more emphasis on reminding us on what has gone before (useful for my fading memory - and the Beeb are so good at this, especially in HD..), plugging in the process those 'minority sports' (defined by some as those which the majority of us do) that struggle to get the media attention they deserve (and I'd include athletics in the latter camp - just look at the fate of the beautiful 2012 Olympic Stadium to get a feel for how our sport is prioritised..) and squeezing in as rich and diverse a mix as possible

And as Roy said, we all have our heros (and a certain Martin Rees in this club..)

I agree entirely about the Sports Review of the Year. It was an excellent programme with the SPOTY tagged on the end. However, it didn't fit with the BBC's engagement with the 'rush to the bottom' mentality of competing with ITV (or should it now be itv?) in pandering to the lowest common denominator, rather than trying to maintain a certain standard of journalistic integrity.

And the 2012 Olympic Stadium was a well polished turd that proved beyond doubt that it's the play and not the stage which provides the drama.

Just found this fabulous thread. I clearly managed to miss another riveting programme. It has never been the same since Peter Dimmock stood down. Thanks Tim.
