Hi all,
has anybody had sciatica of the butt and managed to beat it? Ignoring pain is what we runners do isn't it?
Well, nerve pain is pretty bad and won't allow me to ignore it, although I did try.

I only ran once this week on Tuesday in the hope that rest would help with stretches and as I was in Hereford this weekend I thought it would be okay to give the parkrun a go.

However, now I can barely walk, let alone run, so if anybody has had something similar and it's not a horror story, please let me know.

Thanks

Hi Peter,

I have experienced sciatica in the past and it is not something that you should ignore. I am not an expert but speaking from experience You need to determine the cause so that you can take the right steps to rectify the problem. In my case it was a slipped disc (protrubing disc pressing on the sciatic nerve)from incorrect posture when lifting but I understand that it can also be caused by muscular spasm. I noted that you fell towards the end of the Kymin race. Could it be connected with this?

Good luck.

Thanks Clive, it was hurting a bit the week before the Kymin. I was hoping it would go away, but it's not happening. I can't think of when it happened, but it could have been to do with lifting something in work.

Sound familiar?

You're 12 weeks into your marathon training program; while out on a long run, you develop a sharp pain in your buttocks. As you continue to run, the pain persists. Your hamstrings feel tight and even a little sore, though by slowing the pace the symptoms subside a little, and you finish the run. While sitting at your favorite post-run hangout, there is a tingling sensation in the back of your thigh and calf.

You've just been introduced to your piriformis muscle. This muscle arises from the sacrum, passes through the sciatic notch (an opening in the pelvic bone) and attaches to the bony prominence on the side of the thigh (greater trochanter). The piriformis plays a role in the outward rotation of the hip. The sciatic nerve is formed by five nerves exiting from the spinal cord; it typically passes through the notch in front of the piriformis. In approximately 15 percent of the population, the nerve passes through the muscle.

The above is very common but whatever it is the best advice I can give is below.

My advice to you would be to book an apointment with Martin Halley!

He is an excellent physio, the best I have seen and I have seen many. He will get you back on the right track. Smile

You need to see the GP/physio to diagnose the cause, Peter. I've had similar issues & Lyndon's description is correct. However, if it's a disc problem you really need to get it checked out. You may need an X-ray?

Andrew Seary is also good & offers a club discount.

HI. Back in 2008 I had your type of symptoms. I was treated at the Royal Glam physio department for months with not much success. Eventually the pain increased 10 fold,I could hardly walk. Ended up having a mri scan. Prolapsed disc diagnosed. The earier symptoms were probably a protruding disc (bulging) leading to prolapsed. It's crucial to get the correct diagnosis. Insist on a scan. It was a very long painful recovery.
I won't continue with the horror story lol.
All the best,fingers crossed mate.

Definitely go see your GP in first instance. You can also get general info on "Patient UK " website- a really useful resource for all sorts of ailments
