I've just spotted on Welsh athletics a race this weekend 'round the reservoir' at Tata Steel.
Has anyone done it before?
It's two quid to enter on the day so for that bargain price I reckon I'll be there.

I was also looking at running this race. It's fits in well with distances that I can manage at the moment. Some more info is on the West Glam XC League Facebook group.(https://www.facebook.com/groups/184941328308392/?fref=nf)

Tata Steel Round the Res Race

I am happy to report that the Round the Res race will take place on Sunday 8th January 2017 at 11.00am. This will be the 39th consecutive running of the event. Sadly it will be the first time it has not been a round of the West Glam League but I hope all WGL teams will support us.
Current plan is to run the same route as last year – 2 laps in an anti- clockwise loop of the reservoir. Start and finish at the Sailing Club. Total distance approximately 5.6 miles (9km).

Res gates will be open from 9.30am and registration will take place in the sailing club from 9.45am. There is some parking at the sailing club (approx. 50 cars) but it is on grass. Also the res gates will be shut from approx. 10.45am for the duration of the race so cars will not be able to leave until the course is clear of runners. There is also roadside parking for a few cars just before the res gates, a few spaces just inside the res gates and there is parking at the crematorium. Please share cars wherever possible.

Entry fee is £2 for affiliated runners and £4 for non-affiliated. You will be asked to show your Welsh Athletics affiliation card or £4 will be charged.
Depending on numbers we may run one race for everybody or will split the event into a ladies race starting at 11.00am, then the men a few minutes later.
We will have a finish funnel in operation so runners remember to stay in order when you cross the finish line. Afterwards please stay clear of the finish area and let the timekeepers do their job. Also do not warm down around the res – we only have permission to use the land for the race itself.

If you retire from the race for any reason please inform an official, preferably at the start / finish area.

Tea / coffee / bacon rolls etc will be available in the sailing club at very reasonable cost.

The wearing of earphones is forbidden under UK Athletics rules so any runner seen wearing them will be disqualified

Fab thanks for this.
Would you like to lift share? - save the number of cars on the road?
I live in Whitchurch but happy to meet at club if that's easier for you. Have sent you an e-mail with my address.

Hi yes I ran this race. What to say about it...... ?

Well, it's two laps of the reservoir at the steel works, so it was never going to be the most scenic of events! However I was surprised that for the most part the steel works are well hidden behind the trees - so whilst it's not the prettiest of places I can 't say that I found the setting displeasing.

The path is road / tarmac all the way round - despite been a previous fixture of a cross country league! - although there was a good layer of sheep droppings on much of the course so maybe that explains that!

Am I selling it to you yet?

It's a pancake flat course except for a small decline at the start and incline back up the same way at the end (only about 20 strides) which made it perfect for my training needs - namely to go and run about 10k as hard as I could, which I would not have achieved on any training run outside of race conditions. (For clarity, this event is not a 10k race nor does it claim to be; it comes in at about 9km as advertised - I clocked 5.6 miles.)

The path is plenty wide enough all the way round for over taking. I did reflect whilst running that it may well suitable for guide running.

Although the route is very straight forward (even I couldn't get confused with 2 laps of a circle) they put a good number of marshals out on the course. Likewise there were attendants situated on the drive on arrival to point runners in the right direction and to assist with parking. Parking is limited but I arrived only 45 minutes before the start of the race and had no problems. Likewise registration was quick and painless.

There were a good number of people from various different clubs and it was an odd feeling to be the only 'croups' at an event. However there was a lovely relaxed feel to it; I had a good chat with some ladies from 3ms and during the race encouraged / was encouraged by a another runner to dig in and push harder for the last mile. (Story of my life, I overtook him with words of encouragement and he finished quite a bit ahead of me in the end!) There were handshakes and smiles at the end, and coffee at the sailing club where the race starts / finishes was only 50p. They were cooking up bacon baps which smelt amazing but I made do with my apple! We all have regrets. :-/

When I popped into the ladies changing room I was surprised to see not one but two (!2!) working showers! Having not brought a towel I'll admit to just washing my face and am pleased to report that the water was HOT! And there was soap! And toilet tissue. And paper towels.

The results correspond with my own recorded time. Bingo!
Plus, it would appear that the organiser has e-mailed round the results.Fabulous!

What more does anybody want from a race that cost £2?

I think it would be particularly suitable for newer runners / those with less experience of racing as it really was very relaxed and without the pressure of some of the bigger events; I usually feel a jittery at the start of a race but on this occasion was very calm and just stood around having a chat until it was time to go!

Would I do it again? Probably. It would be nice if some of you want to join me.

A message from Neil Samuel (he is involved with the race organisation and a familiar face from the Castles Relay's Tata Steel team):

"Next year will be the 40th Round the Res race so it would be good to get Les Croups along. Planned date is 14 January 2018."

if its a good race..

is it off road? off road champs ? or road - short course / long course options..

good to support cheap rates.. and you can enter on the day..

There are far to many over priced races that you have to enter a year in advance..

James - see my previous post. It's road. Approx 9km. I thought it was a good race overall, especially for the money. Not scenic but fast and flat.

Amanda - if you can reply to Neil with my thanks for the picture and results I'd be most grateful.

Cheers
