I think it must be a personal thing, I really thought I could just relax and enjoy the experience but to be honest I just cant!

If I havent given my best leading up to an event I just cant enjoy it and it feels like a hiding to nothing! I run to push the envelope and to challenge myself. If I dont give it 100% leading up to it for whatever reason it defeats the whole object to me.

Some people might say its not in the spirit of it but I believe you make your own spirit when it comes to running. I just spend the whole race thinking about what might have been if I havent prepared properly and running myself into the ground.

Sure the atmposphere is great but I think that is down to your interpritation of it and much of it is in the mind, its all about why you run.

I think this is why I dont race enough though so its a bad habit in fairness.

Any thoughts on this?

hmm depends..

well at the moment I'm not where near by best.. so will tell you after the half.. I enjoy a good off road race no where near my best.. as I cannot tell the time v my best..
same with x country too.

Running yourself into the ground is not preparing properly. Train well but leave the best running for the race itself.

And you have to enjoy it, because if you don't, what is the point? If you're beating yourself up all the time over your race times then it's just going to make you depressed.

Thats a good point about off road races.

Im going to aim to be nicely fit for Wokingham now as its going to take that long. I have already ran The Cardiff Half this year and feel if I run on Sunday im going to be miles off that time so I will save it for next year.

The irony is I love running the Cardiff Half but I would rather preserve the memories of the last time when I gave it a good go.

I love Autumn and Winter training but the Summer always weighs heavy on me. Looking forward to some great Winter races now which is when I most enjoy running! Smile

Yes Lyndon, I can very much relate to the mind set you have about racing and I wouldn't enter races either until I could feel like I was near to my best.However, because I have had plenty of practice in coming back from injury, and I am returning from one now, I have found that actually racing gets you to your best quicker than just training. Probably because you can't help giving it your all, which you can't replicate in training. I can't anyway, so I would say to carry on racing, but your mind set should be that they are helping you to get back to where you want to be.
