Been going through a bad patch running wise which seems to tend to happen at this time of year! I just wondered if anybody is familiar with having a groin strain and how long it took to shake it off?

I have taken a break from running and had a nice relaxing holiday in Scotland. I have done very little training over the past few weeks. I went through a period of cycling which seemed to have no impact on it but does little to maintain fitness.

As the pain has decreased I have started to run 5 miles every other day and my last two runs have been 7. I am actually starting to enjoy running again. My biggest fear is to have to stop doing it altogether but I think I am long way from that!

My GP has confirmed this as a groin strain which is what I suspected it was. It is tough trying to get your fitness back and managing an issue like this but im sure im not the only one to be in this position!

I find it quite uncomfortable for a mile or two and then it eases off alot. Naturally im reticent about doing speed work or anything intensive and this has put me off running with other people as I felt it best to run at my own pace.

Im a vet 40 next January and already my body seems to be reminding me of that! Smile

Has anybody else experienced this and how long did it take you to recover?

Am my managing this the right way?

Am my just being a big baby? BigGrin

Hi Lyndon, sorry to hear that you are going through a tough one again.
I have to say that I agree with your feelings of frustration!
I have been taking it easy to get over a knee injury after the Swansea Half and then last Friday my back nearly went, just reaching for my razor for a shave.
Thankfully it did not go completely but I still have not been able to run for over a week now.
I think that our bodies are just testing us to see how we cope with new random challenges :)
I am 39 this year.
I do not have any med qualifications but I have been told by those in the know to listen to your body.
So just take it easy and remember that even little runs are cool.

You are definately right about taking it easy and short runs being cool.

I think its better to go out and run any distance than nothing if your capable. I ditch my Garmin and just check my watch before and after so I have a measure but im putting less pressure on myself.

I think part of the trick to regaining your fitness is as you say listening to your body. I think its a good idea to think of your first few runs in a very casual way and progressively take them more seriously as your body allows.

I think if you train week in week out sometimes it is a good idea to take a break anyway. I think your mind benefits as well as your body and you will apreciate running more after a short spell away from it.
