Leading up to the Castles I wasn't feeling my best, but then I was full up with a cold so I figured that was the issue. I ran the same course in 2010 and had a really good race even though I was far worse. I was fitter back then but my cold wasn't as bad, so as there were few reserves available the best thing to do was to run it.
I really did struggle that day and have never known such a huge drop in form! After the event I found training alot more difficult and could only manage a couple of sessions. My week off work arrived and I spent much of it doing very little as I felt constantly tired and lethargic.
Concerned I went to see my doctor, who checked the levels of Lithium in my blood, which is something I take for biopolar disorder. Ironically the bipolar doesn't trouble me because of the Lithium and running.
A doctor was sent out to my parents on Saturday the 18th and said it was crucial that I see my GP asap. The levels had become toxic enough to affect my health and if left unchecked could have became fatal! They sat at 1.5 when the theraputic dose is 0.4 to 1.0 if levels go up to 3 it can be lethal!
Within a couple of days of adjusting my dose I feel a new lease of life! I feel mentally and physically a hundred times better! To get it in perspective how much it's affected my running, I have put some stats from a hard training run before and after the intervention on the same route.
14th June 6.96 Miles 50.13 Duration 7.12 Minute Miles 383 Feet Elevation Stride Rate 231
24th June 7.02 miles 44.55 Duration 6.23 minute miles 375 Feet Elevation Stride Rate 193
Im going to set about getting myself back to normal now, I'm just gutted about the timing of it!

Good to know that you're on the road to recovery Lyndon. A scary experience yes, but hopefully one to learn from so this doesn't recur.

Thanks everyone it was a bit of a scare. First time in 20 years this has happened but I will certainly be on my guard from now on! I'm not one to bottle things up which is something else that has served me well. See you at the club soon.

You Doctor is obviously better qualified than me to suggest a cause for the high levels, but might it have been to do with the heat? My wife was on Lithium for a while and I know she had to be really careful to keep herself hydrated in hot weather.

Alan I think it can be a factor but it can just go up for various reasons. I will be having it monitored every 3 months instead of 6 for the forseeable future.
