How long before training takes effect?

OK, you've been running well & getting good results, (& are relatively injury free). So, you decide to up the ante & increase mileage/intervals etc.
How long will it be before the increased training will show as an improvement in results? (Presuming of course you remain relatively injury free:-)
I've read that it takes a minimum of 2wks for any physical adaption to occur, but I know from experience that some adaptions can take several months, (or even years?)

If only it were a slightly more exact science! It'd be nice to have more of an idea whether a session will benefit me or leave me too tired for the next race.
I've read anything from 1 week to 3 weeks for adaptations to kick in, it depends on a myriad of factors of course.
Generally if I'm unfit and ramp up my training I notice changes after a week.

Not sure if reading your post the wrong way, but personally, if I was upping mileage/speed work, etc. with the aim of racing well off it, I always went with 3 months of solid training.
If you are asking about performing a few extra speed sessions prior to racing, then that is a piece of string or picking a raffle ticket out of a hat...
