I figured a sensible target was 82 minutes for this race based on my training logs and looking at previous performances. I think I'm a good 2 months off a PB.

My splits are a bit disappointing and I'm not sure if that's due to being a bit too fast over the first few miles or the weather. When the freezing rain came down it did feel like it was weighing me down and it was hard to shake off the cold.It makes it harder to work out how poorly I may have started.

My splits were.....

1. 6.08 (ironically weaving past runners in a panic made me too fast)
2. 6.17
3.6.20
4.6.14
5.6.05
6.6.00
7.6.12
8.6.07
9.6.09
10.6.24 (bad weather kicks in)
11.6.28Blink
12.6.20
13.6.20
.1.5.01

Total 1.22.18

Disappointing loss of time at the end and the worst weather I have seen in months of training! I don't want to make excuses for my poor finish but it was tough out there! Overall I think it was a satisfactory performance and something to build on.Any advice would of course be appreciated.

I often contribute to a beginners forum and was chuffed to see my name in the same posts as Farah and Karoki! The wonders of modern technology. BigGrin

Great effort from Farah

Lynd is holding on well, 58:01 for 15K.

Good performance from Mo to hold on while he was in no-man's land and nab the bronze.

Fantastic race!

Mo judged it really well for 3rd.

Lynd on 1:21:36 pace and he probably lost some time at the start!

Look at Kamworor's knee!

Good result for Callum Hawkins, look forward to seeing what he does in London next month.

Yes, great time in the conditions.

Karoki will run London. He's in great shape.

Come on Lynd!

Lynd's splits so far:

19:33 + 19:12 + 19:16
38:45
58:01

Lynd finishes in 1:22:18, nice work

Excellent for Lynd. And thanks again for the updates, James.

I will also run now.

Bit late. But im heading out now too. It looks awful out.

Well done Lynd.

Hi Lyndon,

Here's my mile splits below. Apart from the start & fading badly at the end they loosely parallel yours. Conservative pace until the barrage, then carried along by the wind, then bad weather just before 8M, which killed my legs with cold & soaked my shoes & made them feel like lead, and died at 13-14 (sore hip).

1 7:03.5
2 6:50.4
3 6:59.0
4 7:10.5
5 6:45.2
6 6:49.4
7 6:57.0
8 7:01.9
9 7:03.1
10 7:18.0
11 7:28.7
12 7:27.5
13 8:03.2
14 1:55.1
Summary 1:34:53
Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast!

Thanks for the thread Lyndon.
I ran 1:35:17 and was really disappointed with that.
I went into the race with a heavy head cold, but I've often done that before and it hasn't affected my performance at all. I haven't attempted to analyse my run mile-by-mile as I would normally do, simply because of the weather. Its variability destroyed rhythm, making any analysis a depressing exercise. I was relieved just to finish.
So I'm putting it down to experience, and hoping conditions will be kinder in London.

I was very pleased with my time, a PB, I thought the conditions were not unfavourable for much of the race-the first section into the wind I could tuck in behind other runners, the barrage to Cardiff Bay was great with a tail wind I was nearly flying being so light.

At the 15k chip mat I was suddenly hit by a gust of wind and rain, soaked in seconds, suddenly everything came v heavy and the wind knocked me off my stride and rhythm.
The rest of the race was hard work to try to get back in a good rhythm. I think quite a few runners struggled then.
Martin Williams went past me not long after and I couldn't keep up - He had a very impressive time winning the M50 cat.

Fantastic running Andrew I would be over the moon with a time like that especially given the weather!

You never know with racing how its going to pan out. Even a runner of Micks calibre can have a bad day!!! All you can do is prepare as best as possible and limit the risks.

Aproaching the 10 mile mark I felt great and was confident of a decent finish. It felt like moments later that there was a dramatic change in the weather!

As the rain hit a runner next to me yelled "Is that the best you can do!" like he was defying the gods. It had all of the venom of a scene from Braveheart! I must admit it did give me a huge mental boost and helped keep me determined for the rest of the race.ThumpUp

My splits follow a similar pattern after 15k Lyndon. The rain was a factor but also the wind. Most people's 5k splits on the tracker looked similar so I guess the wind was more of a factor than the rain for most people.

I treated this race more as a training run, simply because I have only done half the long distance runs that I usually would do preparing for this, this is through injury and a heavy cold which has hampered my training properly since November. I am happy with 1:38 though as I took it steady throughout, but I have hit another injury again in the same area around the side of my ankle. I have no idea how I have done it as I felt good throughout the race and the hours after it. It came on when I got up in the early hours of the next morning. Feeling really down again now, as I was hoping to get my long runs in for Castles qualifying, but this could put an end to that now. It really has been a frustrating 6 months for me, but I will just need to cross train for a week or two and assess the situation then, congratulations to everybody who done it in testing conditions, some real impressive times recorded too.

I know how frustrating it can be to be held back by injury and especially colds!!! I have been very fortunate over the past 3 months not to get a cold but I have been cautious bordering on paranoia!

My girlfriend got a cold and I moved out for a few days. I take zinc every day and the juice of a lemon in water every morning. I constantly wash my hands and avoid touching my face. You cant avoid them forever though.

I hope you recover soon. Try not to push your training before your ready. As runners we all have bad patches and bad years, we just have to work through them. It doesent seem like it now but when you recover you will be stronger for it.I hope your back fit and firing soon.

Make sure you dont push yourself too hard when your training and keep listening to your body. If you dont get ocasional easier weeks you will leave yourself vunerable to illness and injury. If you try to play catch up it wont help you.

I have learnt that you need to take a step back acess what you have and work with it. If you try to force your situation too much it can be very counterproductive. You have to ignore previous goals and look at things objectively. From what you have said I think you are already doing that to some extent at least with your cross training and reacessments though.

Thanks Lyndon for your words of support and advice, I will definitely take it on board there, though that was quite extreme how you to tried to avoid the colds though BigGrin . You seem to be going very well yourself now, cause I knew you had a bit of a bad stretch like me going back some time ago. So I am definitely not going to be too downbeat and come back stronger as you said. I might just forget the castles this year now, I think time will be against me to try to qualify and think about making a go for it for the Caerphilly 10K in Mid June.
