Reading what people say about goals for the coming year tells you a lot about the person.
Some are very time-specific, some very general.
Mine used to be very time specific, and indeed, I would still admit to thinking 1:30 for Half Marathon and 3:15 for marathon are possible in 2016 in the right conditions and on the right course.
I missed 7 weeks due to injury last year, which tore a huge hole in my Summer 2015 ambitions.
You can always regain your endurance, but that effectively meant no running/racing at speed during the year.
I hope to put that right in 2016. No particular time goals, but plenty of shorter races post-London.
September 2016 will see me pass 50 years continual racing competition, and I'm very fortunate to still be able to compete, as very few of my early peers either are able to run or want to. Sometimes being philosophical and realistic is a goal in itself. And I never cease to be amazed or inspired by those around me.
I'll even give you an example for tomorrow at parkrun.
A close friend, who was a brilliant runner many years ago, and who I now write to on Facebook, is Fred Bell (Woking AC). He's originally from West Wales and he's now 72. In his most recent run at Cardiff, he ran 25:45. But on 18 August 1971, he broke the Welsh 5000 metres record with 14:01.6 (just compare that with the recent parkrun record of 14:24).
Fred is an inspiration - come and say hello tomorrow.

Targets

1. Get back to sub 16.30 5k and sub 34 10k

2. A sub 1.14 half

3. Sub 2.40 in London. Sub 2.55 in snowdoina

I enjoy disappointment :-)

Good luck all

Main target in my mind at the moment is to beat my Cardiff HM time from last year. Not 100% confident on it, but got a plan in place!

Despite injury/colds etc. at the beginning & end of the year I managed to improve my current time for the half from 1:33:35 (FoD 2013) & 1:34:39 (road 2014) to 1:31:12 (Cardiff 2015), by modifying my training. With further modification, I think sub 1:30 is possible in 2016, barring the unforeseen. (See you there Mick!)

My current best for 10M is 68:14 (2014). This year it's 68:25 (Brecon), but I'm claiming moral victory here, as Brecon is a tough course & measures long. Pacing was 6:46/mile, so sub 68min should be possible.

Current best for 10k is 40:28 (2013), 40:35 (2015). Target is sub 40min but realistically this is a tough one as I need to improve my 5k time (19:40) & I'm not sure the speed is there.

So, the races are:
World Half Marathon Cardiff March.
A flat 10M.
Selection for the Castles.
Possibly the World Masters in Lisbon?

Run well in 2016,
Merry Xmas & a Happy New Year!

I'll never run steeper

I like reading people goals for the new year. I have a few goals myself unfornatley some many never be obtained like running the castles but I run because I enjoy it and if I can do somethin like Buth Wells then I will. But I think it's equally important to give something back to running and the club. Marshal and help out whenever possible. Volunteer at the park run at least once a month. Remember too that the club turnned 35 this year and in 5 years the club will be 40. Our club is not just the biggest club in this area but one of the oldest too. So ask yourself in 2016 not what the club can do for you but what you can do for the club to keep it going! Remember that everyone from the slowest to fastest is an important member of the club as we all make the club what it is. Happy Running and Happy 2016 everyone.

Thanks for starting this thread James. I always enjoy ready others goals, good to put them down in writing and share them.
I’m with Mick on this one – ‘sometimes being philosophical and realistic is a goal in itself’. I’m not going to ignore time goals completely, but bearing this quote in mind, would be very happy to get back under 20 minutes for 5k again. The last time I did the London marathon was 2012 and I hope to get to the start line next year and a sub 3:25 would be a bonus.

My main target, though, has got to be to enjoy any running that I can do and not loose sight of this if I end up in the lucky position of being able to train properly. I’d like to say I intend to moan less about cross training, but if I’m to remain realistic, that’s not going to happen.

I wish everyone at Croups and our running community a very happy and successful 2016.

Well seeing as you can't beat the other club member in the Bruce household you have to aim for something Richard!!!

I never quite ran pain free or niggle free since my lacklustre and horrific attempt at my 1st half marathon at Coed-y- Brenin in 2012 until a certain physio in Barry fixed me! That compounded by the fact that I am clumsy -falls, sprains etc...so it has been a frustrating couple of years. I have been lucky in 2015... ONLY 1 incident where the road came to meet my knees.

Fitness wise is to get back to where I was in 2012, injury free and pain free.

Races - Merthyr Half Marathon in March, 1 other half marathon - preferably a trail half and other 5 - 6 miles trail races.

I recently had some work done in my shop. The builder had to move a few things to get to the area required. Upon the completion of the job I told him that I'd put the stuff back as there was a lot of crap that needed throwing away. One particular box had the word 'Books' written in marker pen on top. I decided to take a look. The first thing I came across was an old training diary from 1991 (I was 21 approaching 22).
As I was looking through I kept thinking wouldn't it have been great if Garmins had been around then !!!! All I could record were times as distances were an educated guess at best - apart from track sessions. One of the runs that I did quite often that year went from Cadoxton (Barry) out past Dow Corning, out to Sully, past Cosmeston, Penarth, Llandough, Dinas Powys and back through Westra lanes into Cadoxton. On Sunday morning I did that run. With my Garmin. It took me 84 minutes and was exactly 10 miles. In '91 it took me 64 minutes!!!!!!

Hence, my aims for the year-
1) Quit running
2) Work my tits off and earn enough money to.....
3) Buy a DeLorean !!!!!!!

Happy New Year to everyone and best of luck with your goals.

This time last year I wrote :
"Another xmas and another shock on the weighing scales.London marathon as always will by main goal this year and hoping to a sub 3:15 this year. But think the main goal will be to stay injury free.hope to run a sub 18:30 5K as well."

Although injury did hamper VLM preparation for 1.5 months I still achieved my marathon goal with 3:11.

So this year I think I'll set myself harder, but achievable, goals for myself.

2016 Running goals

  • Marathon: a sub 3hr marathon

  • Half marathon: 1:23 ish

  • 5k /Park Run : Back under 18 mins

Best of luck everyone for 2016BigGrin

My aim for 2016 is that my second year with Les Croups will mirror what I achieved in the first - a PB in every distance I attempt.

I'll also add one more - increase the time spent at the Black Cock waiting for James to arrive to allow for a light snack on top of the cuppa that I'm already able to enjoy!

Happy New Year to all of you!

Well done you funny buggers. These posts did make me laugh!
Without Humour we are all in trouble.

My goals for 2016 are as follows:
Not to try an be better than James the Bruce or Alan the mad. Don't want to end up in A&E!

I would like to get a key for the changing rooms for Thursday nights, as I am always first there!

I would like to run outside as much as possible.

I would like to complete at least 3 half marathons. These are my favourite.

I would very much like to earn as many points as I can for LC.

I will try and probably fail not to get so very, ery excited about running outside because my wife might actually go and buy the lump hammer she is talking about.

I will do my best not to take my legs for granted and to use them as much as I can.

Have legs, will run.

I have had a bit of a disappointing 2015 to what I have done in 2013 and 2014 which is largely due to injury. I have just started getting back from an injury which I sustained in November hence me not being down the club lately. I have been just purely training on a cross trainer to keep my fitness up since the injury, but now I have just started sessions doing half running and half on a cross trainer and it seems to be going good so far. I will probably do this for next 2 weeks or so before I can be confident to put more mileage in to my running and progressively cut the time on the cross trainer. So what I am hoping to achieve this year is:

1. First and foremost, keep injury free. If I can do this then the following goals should be achievable.
2. Get into the Castles Vets team.
3. Sub 89 mins for the Cardiff Half Marathon.
4. Sub 40 mins for 10k.
5. Get 1st place for age category in the John Clay 5K if I go to Florida this year, achieved this when I last went there in 2013.
