Hi Everyone - a couple of lady members have asked in the past, so I have organised a self defence session for lady members with one of the instructors at my Kick Boxing club. His name is Gareth Peake and he is a 2nd degree Black Belt.

The probable date would be Saturday 9th January probably 10am until 12 pm in Cathays Community Centre on Cathays Terrace. The price would be £10 per person and he needs a minimum of 10 people to make the session viable and ideally 15 to 20. If you are interested please can you reply to this post or the one on the Facebook page. I need payment in advance please as Gareth will need to book facilities etc and I don't want to mess him around. I'm usually at Monday hills, Thursday at the club or Parkrun.

If you would like more information, then please just let me know. At this stage we're only looking for ladies to show interest because of the nature of the session - wives / girlfriends / partners of gentlemen members are of course also welcome.

This is the information that I have directly from Gareth.

From experience, I'd suggest 2 hours with a mixture of presentation and practical. This works quite well and retains focus. The presentation or discussion part would cover situational awareness, what happens to the body when we become adrenalised, steps to avoid being a victim, weapons of opportunity, what steps to take after an attack and responsibility of care etc. It would run between practical elements. 15 mins practical, 10 mins presentation, 15 mins practical etc. I'd cover a set of basic attacks and defences that people are likely to encounter, focusing on drilling these instead of 500 fancy techniques that will be probably forgotten in 5 minutes.

Jokes aside, it's well worth it. I've attended similar sessions before and it's always good to have a refresher of how to manage yourself in tricky situations.

Parking:
There is parking available on nearby streets like The Parade - please arrive early to make sure you can find parking.

Clothing:
Something that you can move freely in. The course will involve stopping and starting so I suggest tracksuit bottoms and a couple of layers.
We will have a couple of quick breaks - please also bring some water.

Format (subject to change on the day):
9.50 arrive
10.00 access to hall, introductions, briefing and house rules.
10.10 session begins
10.50 break
11.00 resume
11.30 review (a chance to practice random attacks and defences from the course - less scripted)
11.45 wrap up begins - opportunity for final questions
11.55 close session
12.00 hall to be vacated.
