It is a bit odd. We don't have special women's half marathons which are only ten miles, or ladies only marathons of twenty miles duration; or for that matter a ladies Ultra Trail De Mont Blanc where they only go up the first couple of thousand feet, so why is XC any different? Tradition probably, whatever, this could be an interesting thread!

Bring it on! Even I would be prepared to race for that distance (as long as it is xc)

no terrible idea, we dont want women and men in the same race for x country...
my position has nothing to do with the fact that Claire is likely to beat me at this distance.. unless they increase the x country to nearer 10 miles..

Agree it should be same distance though separate gender races. Same awards and prize money categories too.

x country is the only event I know that women and men run different distances but I don't mind running the same distance as men but a a different time! Japan had or maybe still do a women only mararthorn and Avon make up used to run women only races in the 80's. Race for Life is still women only but Prostrate cancer have men only races. Running is not the only sport that still has difference. Wimblon for example give the female winner an oversize dinner plate and less prize money than the male winner who gets massive cup and more pize money! I would be quite happy if I could get paid for running.

There still is the Women only marathon in Tokyo, there is also a Woman's Running series which is women only and they hold one in Cardiff. The men only charity races are very new and don't get the same publicity as Race for Life, but as with Race for Life, they are not actually running event's. They are corporate business looking to make money. None of the entry fee for Race for Life goes to the Charity, they only get the sponsorship money.
With the tennis there is a difference in the prize money due to the men playing best of 5 sets whereas the women play best of 3 sets

Oh no, don't do anything p.c until after my cross country debut on Sunday - as it is I thought I might try and sneak into the U13 girls' race - I'd still come last, but it would at least be shorter!

There is no UKA rule which limits the distances for women, in recent times the Masters' Race in the Cardiff Cross Challenge has often been a joint event although the distances may have been different. This time of the year we want races to finish without the need of floodlights!! (Only joking). The Gwent League rule is that if an athlete takes more than double the time of the winner then it is not necessary to record a time. We were threatened with Court Action by a very slow lady when we told her of this limit. On one occasion she finished 2 races later! The Men 65+ and 70+ may run in the Ladies' Race so we are not Sexist. At World Championship Level Women run lesser distances.
