The times must have been gun to tape as I started at the very back due to a last minute dash to the loo. My watch read 2:06:44. What was the point of having a chip?

Good point, Clare - I think it was all to do with the electronic timing every 10 km and at the finish. For the benefit of those reading this, an electronic screen by the side of the course displayed your name, race number, elapsed time, and very importantly, race position/per age category. I spent a lot of time watching this screen as the marathon runners were finishing in order to work out the times and age group medallists for anyone I knew. Like you, I lost a lot of time in the chaotic start (as we all did) and the results don't reflect the actual time in competition.

Since the advent of chip timing within road races and endurance events, all "official" times are gun to chip, it is the only way that times can be calculated. If we had just chip from mat to mat it would become a time trial, not a race. I know that in mass races, (London, Great North, Cardiff etc.) we all look at our chip times, but officially it is gun to chip.
