Oscar Pistorius has just been sentence to five years for culpable homicide. He will serve one sixth of this sentence before being considered for parole. He said that he did not know his girl friend Reva Steenkamnp was in the toilet! He was also given a 3 year suspended sentence for firing a gun in a restaurant. I personally do not believe this is long enough. He took someone life. This unfornately also comes on the back of the news that an ex - Cardiff City footballer ( sorry I can't remember his name ) has just been realised from prison after serving time for rape and wants to return to professional football and hopefully play in the world cup. Sorry but I think not. Many youngsters would view these sports men as role models and give the message that it didn't matter what they did they still play professionally and that they would receive light sentences. There are better role modes. Unfonately there are cultures today this still view women as objects rather that the individuals that they are.

If you're referring to Chedwyn Evans, I don't think he's ever played for the Redbirds.

Don't worry about him playing in the World Cup tho. He's a Welsh international.

And what about the chap that punched his opponent in the rugby league final? A 10-game ban! A joke! If that happened on the streets the perpetrator would have probably got a few months in prison!

I can understand Tracey's sense of outrage, both at Oscar Pistorious' sentencing and at Ched Evans' apparently casual attitude to his conviction for rape. Sadly, it probably comes down to money. Oscar could afford a very good legal team, and Ched Evans plays in a sport where a lot of the time money is more important than morality.

I can't comment on the sentence, which does appear lenient, as I've only seen what's appeared on TV and I know nothing about South African law. What I do find encouraging is that a black lady judge, brought up in Soweto, can send a white man to prison, with all that Oscar represents in South Africa. We've a lot to thank Nelson Mandela for.

Yes Mick that is very encouraging, unfornately there is still a lot of segregation in South Africa. A lot of people who live South Africa are there because their ancestors were left to settle there after the salve trade was abolished. It's said thing today that in many countries including Britain and America that people from different backgrounds won't mix. Particularly in America where they fought a civil war over equality.

..or just another example of violence against women (the leniency of the sentence a reflection of our tolerance to?)

The mobile phone evidence that she was scared of him (and bullied by) was terrible...

(yesterday's Grauniad says it all..)
